Rally and Advance!! Griffins Defeat Mercyhurst to Move Into NCAA Quarterfinals

Seton Hill returned to the NCAA Tournament with a first round North Region matchup with Mercyhurst in Erie on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
Seton Hill trailed Mercyhurst 5-1 with 2:43 to play in the second quarter but outscored the Lakers 7-2 over the final 33:43 to advance in the NCAA Tournament with an 8-7 win over Mercyhurst.  It's the second win over the Lakers in five days for the Griffins.  SHU improves their record to 13-6 overall while the Lakers see their season come to an end with an 11-5 record. 
 
The Griffins got on the scoreboard first just over two minutes into the contest on a goal from Vincent Cogliandro in a man up situation.  That was the only goal the Griffins would score in the quarter as the Lakers scored the other two goals in the quarter as they took a 2-1 lead after one quarter of play. 
 
The Lakers scored the first three goals of the second quarter as they were able to extend their lead to 5-1 with 2:43 to play in the half.  David St Clair cut the Lakers lead to three with a goal with 2:02 to play in the half.  SHU trailed 5-2 at the halftime break.  Kevin Mo made seven saves in the half to keep the Griffins close. 
 
The third quarter belonged to the Griffins as they scored the only three goals of the quarter to tie the contest at five.  Jack Ellis scored the first two goals of the quarter, just over two minutes apart, as the Griffins cut the Laker lead to 5-4 with 6:40 to play.  McGarity Harper scored with 1:31 remaining in the quarter as the Griffins rallied to tie the contest at five. 
 
Mercyhurst retook the lead one more time with a goal 2:50 into the fourth quarter.  SHU answered back with two goals just 32 seconds apart to take the lead for good.  Ellis scored his third of the game, a man up goal, with 9:48 to play to tie the game at six.  Zack Estabrooks scored the go ahead goal with 9:12 to play as SHU took a 7-6 lead.  Thomas Hanulak scored the game winner with 2:38 to play as SHU built an 8-6 lead.  The Lakers scored with 1:06 left and had a shot from in tight with seconds remaining but the shot went wide. 
 
Ellis led the Griffins with three goals and an assist.  Harper finished with a goal and assist. 
 
The Griffins outshot the Lakers 47-37.  SHU won nine of the 17 faceoffs. 
 
SHU advances to the NCAA Quarterfinal and North Region Semifinal on Sunday afternoon against top seed Mercy.  The game will be played at SUNY Purchase at 1 PM.
