The Seton Hill men's lacrosse team continued their run through the NCAA Tournament with a matchup with top seed Mercy in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at SUNY Purchase in Purchase, NY.
Seton Hill scored eight goals in the second half but it was not enough as they came up just short in an 11-10 loss to Mercy. The Griffins end their season at 13-7 while the Mavs improve to 15-1 and advance to the NCAA Semifinals where they will play LeMoyne next weekend.
The game got off to a slow start with just three goals scored in the first quarter. Mercy scored the first two goals of the game before
Jeremy Sforzo scored with 3:54 to play in the quarter, cutting the Mavs lead to 2-1.
Mercy outscored the Griffins 3-1 in the second period. The Mavs scored the first two goals of the second quarter, extending the lead to 4-1.
Zack Estabrooks scored with 3:41 to play before the half as the Griffins trailed 4-2. Mercy scored the final goal of the half as they took a 5-2 lead into the halftime break.
The scoring began to pick up in the second half. The Griffins scored three times in the first eight minutes of the third quarter as they tied the score at five.
Thomas Hanulak scored less than a minute into the half.
Andy Davis and
McGarity Harper scored 33 seconds a part to tie the game at five with 6:43 to play in the third.
David St Clair scored with 4:08 left in the quarter but that goal was sandwiched between two Mavs goals so the Mavs took a 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Mavs opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal at the 10:15 mark. Goals from Harper and Hanulak just 15 seconds a part tied the score at eight with 8:51 to play. The Mavs answered that goal 39 seconds later to take a 9-8 lead. Less than a minute later Hanulak found the back of the cage to tie the score at nine. Two straight from Mercy gave them a 11-9 lead with 3:27 to play. Davis scored with 1:36 to play to trim the lead to 11-10.
Logan Gray won the faceoff but two Griffin shots went wide with the Mavs picking up a ground ball. SHU forced a turnover with 44 seconds to play but the Grififns turned the ball right back over and Mercy was able to run out the clock.
Hanulak ended the contest with three goals and an assist. Davis scored twice and added two assists. Harper also scored twice.
Layne Harich finished with three assists.
Kevin Mo made 14 saves in cage. Gray was 16-24 in faceoffs.
