For the second consecutive game, Seton Hill rolled out to a big halftime lead and then shut out their opponent in the second half to pull away for the victory. This time it came against Lake Erie in the GMAC Tournament semifinals, as the Griffins rolled to an 11-goal halftime advantage and blanked the Storm in the final two quarters in securing a 23-3 victory.
With the victory in the semifinals, Seton Hill advances to the GMAC Championship game on Saturday, which will be a rematch with Mercyhurst. The top-seeded Lakers beat #4 Walsh 20-11 in the other semifinal and will host the Griffins Saturday at 12 pm in the GMAC title game.
In their regular season finale Saturday against Walsh, Seton Hill stormed out to a 9-2 halftime lead and shut out the Cavaliers after that en route to a 15-2 triumph. The Griffins followed a similar recipe on this one, opening up the game by outscoring Lake Erie 5-2 in the opening period. The first five goals of the game were scored by SHU, beginning with a man-up tally by
Jack Ellis 90 seconds in the contest. A pair of goals by
McGarity Harper and scores by
Grady Arnold and
Jeremy Sforzo staked SHU out to a 5-0 lead before the Storm scored twice in the final three minutes of the quarter.
The teams swapped goals early in the second quarter, as
Andy Davis notched his first of two in the quarter 38 seconds in, but Lake Erie answered with a man-up score just over a minute later. The rest of the period belonged to Seton Hill, who ripped off eight consecutive goals to build their 14-3 halftime advantage. Harper scored his third of the day to begin the run, which featured
Blake Morrow scoring twice and single goals by Arnold, Davis, Sforzo,
Peyton Gensler and
Thomas Hanulak.
After the intermission, the Griffins focused on possession and defense, allowing just six total shots and only two on goal by the Storm. Seton Hill would tack on six more goals in the third quarter as well, beginning with man-up scores by Davis and Hanulak in the first minute of the period. Harper scored his fourth of the day during the quarter, while Morrow and Arnold both scored their third of the game and
Connor Zostant chipped in with a goal as well.
In goal,
Kevin Mo had the start and made eight saves through the first three quarters. He was relieved in the fourth by
Josh Miller, who stopped one shot to preserve the second-half shutout. Meanwhile, SHU finished the scoring with a trio of goals, including Zostant's second and tallies by
Noah VandeWater and
Colin Socker.
Harper finished the afternoon with six points on four goals and two assists to lead the Griffin charge. Hanulak (two goals, three assists) and Morrow (three goals, two assists) both finished with five points apiece, while Arnold totaled four points (three goals, one assist) and Davis (three goals) and Sforzo (two goals, one assist) compiled three points each.
