Seton Hill hosted Walsh Saturday afternoon in the final regular season game for both teams before the GMAC Tournament starts this upcoming week. After racing out to a 9-2 halftime lead, the Griffins shut out the Cavaliers in the second half in posting a 15-2 victory to finish the regular season with a 10-6 record.
Five different players scored for SHU in the opening quarter, as Seton Hill broke out to 5-1 lead. It took just 43 seconds for
Andy Davis to put Seton Hill on top, as he scored off an assist from
Peyton Gensler. Barely over a minute later, the lead grew to 2-0 on a score by Gensler. A third goal in a span of 1:46 increased the Griffin margin to 3-0 when
Zack Estabrooks scored an unassisted goal at 12:46 of the first quarter. Walsh scored on a man-up situation with 8:30 left in the quarter, but SHU scored the final goals of the period. A goal by
Thomas Hanulak pushed the lead back to 4-1 and
Jeremy Sforzo struck for the fifth goal with three minutes left to make it a 5-1 advantage.
Another quick strike by Davis got the second quarter rolling, as he scored his second of the day with 37 seconds into the quarter. It took more than eight minutes for another goal to be scored, but then SHU posted three more in a span of 1:46 again. Goals by
McGarity Harper, Hanulak and
Jack Ellis swelled the Griffin lead to 9-1. Walsh managed a goal in the final minute of the half to make it a 9-2 score at the intermission.
The third quarter was the lowest scoring of the day, with only a pair of Griffin goals. Estabrooks scored with six minutes left in the period and Gensler added his third of the day with just under two minutes on the clock to give SHU an 11-2 lead. Although the Cavaliers didn't score in the period, they did manage five shots, but all five were stopped by Seton Hill keeper
Kevin Mo to keep Walsh off the board in the quarter,
Seton Hill completed the impressive victory with four goals in the fourth quarter. Davis scored for the third time in the game, all coming inside the first minute of a quarter, as he struck with 56 seconds gone in the period. Estabrooks also recorded his third goal of the game in the period and the final goals of the game came from
Demetri Yerou and
Vincent Cogliandro. Meanwhile, the Griffin defense allowed just three shots in the fourth quarter. After limiting Walsh to eight shots in the second half, the Cavaliers finished the day with only 20 attempts.
Eleven different Griffins recorded a point in the contest, led by Davis (three goals, one assist) and Gensler (two goals, two assists) with four each. Estabrooks had his three goals, while Hanulak (two goals, one assist) and Harper (one goal, two assists) all had three points each.Â
In net,
Kevin Mo started and stopped 10 shots to earn the win, while
Josh Miller made one save in relief.
Logan Gray had a solid day in face-offs, winning 14 of 17 draws and he also scooped a team-high 12 ground balls.
Next up for the Griffins is the GMAC Tournament, which begins Wednesday. As the two seed, Seton Hill will host #3 Lake Erie (7-6, 4-2 GMAC) in Greensburg at 3 pm. The winner of the match-up will face the winner of #1 Mercyhurst-#4 Walsh in the championship game Saturday.
