Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

#1 Tampa Squeezes Past Griffins

For the second time this season, Seton Hill traveled to the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md., to compete in a non-conference tilt against a top 10 team, this time taking on the top-ranked team in the country, the University of Tampa.

After falling behind by as many as eight early on, the Griffins rallied to get within a goal in the fourth quarter, but Tampa scored the final two of the game to escape with a 19-16 win. Seton Hill, who entered the day ranked 20th in the country, drops to 9-6 this season, while Tampa remained unbeaten at 16-0.

The Spartans struck early and often in the opening quarter, putting four goals on the board in the first 3:34 of the game. They tacked on two more before SHU scored their first goal, as Thomas Hanulak scored an unassisted goal with 22 seconds left. Tampa manged to score twice more before the end of the period to have an 8-1 advantage.

The second quarter also saw Tampa score early to take their largest lead of the game at 9-1, but the Griffins started chipping away shortly after. Seton Hill scored the next four goals and six of the next seven. The Spartans would counter with a couple goals, but SHU outscored the Spartans 8-5 in the second quarter to cut their deficit to 13-9 by halftime. Hanulak, Peyton Gensler and Jeremy Sforzo scored two goals each during the period.

It was a low-scoring third quarter for both sides, although Tampa posted the first three goals of the quarter before Gensler scored with 14 ticks on the clock and it was a 16-10 Spartan lead heading into the fourth quarter. The final stanza started with a goal by SHU's Andy Davis 20 seconds in and was followed by tallies by Hanulak and Davis again to make it 16-13 UT margin with 12 minutes to play.

The Spartans broke the run with a goal near the midway point of the quarter, but it was answered by a score from Jacob Motiuk 11 seconds later. That score was the first of three in a 90-second span, as Zack Estabrooks and Davis scored in that stretch and Seton Hill was within a goal at 17-16 with 6:45 remaining. The Griffins had three shots to tie the game over the next two minutes, but two were blocked and one went high. The Spartans notched an insurance goal with 3:37 and added another with 41 seconds to play while holding the Griffins without a shot over the final four minutes to hold off Seton Hill and escape with the win.

The SHU scoring was led by Davis, who compiled four goals and three assists while also tying for team-high with four ground balls. Hanulak matched Davis in goals with four, while Gensler totaled three goals and one assist. Also tallying multiple goals was Estabrooks and Sforzo with two each, McGarity Harper passed out two assists and Motiuk (one goal) and Justin Dian (one assist) also had points.

In net, Josh Miller started and made nine saves in the first half. Kevin Mo played the second half and also totaled nine stops.

The Griffins are off for a week before concluding their regular season next Saturday with a home game against Walsh University. Seton Hill's seniors will be honored that day and the opening face off is slated for 3 pm.
