Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Big Second Half Not Enough as Griffins Drop Season Opener

The Griffin men's lacrosse team opened their season at home on Sunday afternoon against Lewis University from Romeoville, Illinois.

Seton Hill outscored the Flyers 11-7 in the second half but it was not enough as Lewis scored the final two goals of the contest for a 14-13 win over the Griffins.  It was the first season opener loss for the Griffins since the 2017 season when they dropped the opener by a 10-9 score to #2 Limestone in Gaffney, SC.  The loss was the first for the Griffins in a home opener since the 2012 season when SHU fell to LeMoyne 15-10.

Thomas Hanulak got the Griffins on the board just 31 seconds into the contest off a feed from McGarity Harper to take a 1-0 lead.  Lewis answered back with two straight before Harper scored a man up goal to tie the contest at two with 8:17 to play.  The Flyers scored the final two goals of the quarter to take a 4-2 lead.

The second quarter was all Lewis as they scored the only three goals of the period.  The Flyers led the Griffins 7-2 heading to the halftime break.

The Griffins came out of the halftime break flying, scoring three times in the first 4:17 of the quarter.  Harper scored from Hanulak to open the quarter.  Andy Davis scored the second goal and Peyton Gensler finished a Layne Harich pass to trim the Flyers lead to 7-5.  Hanulak answered 32 seconds after a Lewis goal to make it 8-6.  Zack Estabrooks got the Griffins back to within one with seven minutes to play in the quarter.  Two straight to end the quarter pushed the Flyer advantage to three goals as the game headed to the fourth quarter.

Seton Hill tied the game at 10 with three goals over a 2:12 stretch in the start of the fourth quarter.  Hanulak assisted on Jeremy Sforzo and Davis' goals to open the scoring.  Hanulak finished a Davis pass to tie the game at ten.  The teams then exchanged goals before a man up goal from Gensler gave SHU a 12-11 lead with 5:49 to play.  Just 12 seconds later the Flyers tied the score at twelve.  Less than a minute later, Davis put the Griffins in front 13-12.  Just over a minute later the Flyers tied the score at 13.  Lewis then took advantage of a Griffin turnover to take a 14-13 lead with 2:26 left.  The Griffins were able to force a turnover with 1:11 to play, giving themselves a chance to tie the game but another Griffin turnover gave Lewis the ball back and they were able to run out the clock.

Seton Hill won 22 of the 30 faceoffs in the contest.  SHU outshot the Flyers 45-42 but the Flyers held a 31-21 advantage in shots on goal.  The most important stat of the game was the Griffins committed 18 turnovers to just 11 for Lewis.

Hanulak led the Griffins with three goals and three assists.  Davis added three goals and an assist.  Harper finished with two goals and two assists.  Gensler added two goals.  Sforzo added a goal and three assists.  Logan Gray won 22 of his 30 faceoffs.  Josh Miller made ten saves in the first half.  Kevin Mo made seven saves in the second half.
