After having their rematch with Frostburg State postponed twice, the #7 Griffins and #12 Bobcats were finally able to meet on a cold, snowy and blustery Wednesday afternoon.
The Griffins trailed 9-6 at the half but used a 5-1 third quarter in route to a 12-10 victory over Frostburg State. SHU improved to 7-1 on the season while Frostburg falls to 5-2 on the season.
Frostburg State came out of the gates flying as they scored the first three goals of the contest to take an early 3-0 lead on the Griffins midway thru the first period. Less than a minute after the Bobcats took the 3-0 lead,
Ryan Manbeck scored to cut the lead to 3-1.
Thomas Hanulak scored with 5:52 to play in the quarter to trim the Bobcat advantage to one at 3-2. Manbeck's second of the quarter tied the score at three with two minutes to play. Frostburg scored the final goal of the half as they took a 4-3 lead into the second quarter of action.
Manbeck opened the scoring in the second quarter to tie the contest at four just 1:22 into the quarter. Frostburg State then went on another 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead with 10:33 to play in the half.
Logan Maloni scored his first of the contest to trim the lead to 7-5 with just less than ten minutes to play. Two more from Frostburg extended their lead to 9-5 with just over a minute to play in the half.
Zack Estabrooks scored with 56 seconds to play in the half as SHU trailed 9-6 heading to the halftime break.
SHU outshot Frostburg 22-17 in the half. SHU also won 14 of 17 faceoffs in the half.
From the start of the second half it was all Griffins as they outscored the Bobcats 6-1 in the half.
Maloni and Hanulak scored just twenty five seconds apart in the early portion of the second half as SHU cut the lead to 9-8. From that point on in the quarter, it was all Maloni as he scored three straight goals to close out the quarter and the Griffins led 11-9 late in the quarter. Frostburg got one back before the end of the quarter and trailed 11-10 heading to the fourth.
It was all defense in the fourth quarter as neither team was able to score over nearly the first fourteen minutes of the quarter.
Kevin Mo made six saves in the quarter and the Griffins forced two turnovers to keep the Bobcats off the board.
McGarity Harper scored with 1:03 to play to put the game away as the Griffins were able to run out the clock after forcing one last turnover.
SHU finished with 52 shots to 29 for Frostburg. The Griffins won 22 of 26 faceoffs in the game.
Maloni paced the Griffins with five goals. Manbeck finished with three goals and an assist. Hanulak scored twice.
Logan Gray won 22 of 26 faceoffs. Mo recorded nine saves in the win.
SHU will travel to #4 Mercy on Saturday for another important North Region battle.
