Seton Hill and Mercyhurst met on Saturday afternoon in Greensburg in a battle between two of the top four teams in Division II.
The #4 Lakers used a six goal third quarter to pull away from the #3 Griffins in route to a 17-12 victory. SHU falls to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in G-MAC play while the Lakers improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in G-MAC play.
Mercyhurst jumped on the Griffins by scoring the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead with 9:27 to play in the first quarter.
Robert Hofseth scored a man up goal and
Thomas Hanulak followed with a goal to cut the Lakers lead to 3-2 with 4:48 to play in the quarter. The Lakers scored the final two goals of the quarter to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter.
Just under five minutes into the second quarter, Hofseth scored another man up goal to cut the lead to 5-3. Mercyhurst extended their lead to 6-3 before
Dan Rupert scored a goal with 3.2 seconds to play in the half as SHU cut the Laker lead to 6-4 at the half.
Zack Estabrooks scored with 13:12 to play in the third which cut the Laker lead to one at 6-5. Mercyhurst responded with four straight goals to build their lead back to five at 10-5 midway through the third quarter. Hofseth scored two more goals for the Griffins but the Lakers answered each goal and took a 12-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
Logan Maloni opened the scoring in the fourth quarter but the Lakers answered with two more as they extended their lead to 15-8 with 8:11 to play in the contest. SHU continued to battle throughout the fourth quarter but the Lakers were able to win the big regional contest by five.
The Lakers won the shot battle by a 46-37 margin and held a bigger advantage in shots on goal (32-19). Mercyhurst won 20 of the 33 faceoffs in the contest.
Maloni paced the offense with an eight goal performance. He scored twice and added six assists. Hofseth scored a team high four goals.
Ryan Manbeck finished with three assists.
Kevin Mo made 14 saves in cage.
Andrew Clark led the defense with 4 caused turnovers.
SHU will take a break from G-MAC play as they travel to Georgian Court next Saturday.
