GREENSBURG - Seton Hill men's lacrosse scored four-straight goals to end the second quarter as part of a 9-0 run that spanned both halves, and the Griffins defeated the University of the District of Columbia, 19-9, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
Jack Moran scored three of his team-high four goals in the second quarter, connecting on back-to-back possessions just under a minute apart, giving the Griffins (3-1 overall) a 9-6 lead when he scored off a
Joe Cillo assist with 4:09 to play before the half. Moran would give a helping hand with 2:32 remaining when
John Hofseth's man-up goal put SHU ahead, 10-6.Â
Moran's four-goal game was the second in as many games, and
John Hofseth had his second-straight game with a hat trick.
Logan Maloni and
Sean Stanners scored two apiece, while
Jay Scerbo, Bretty Craig,
Zack Rusch,
Clayton Paysen,
Adam Reimer,
John Miller,
Ryan Manbeck, and
Robert Hofseth all added goals in the win. Moran, Hofseth, and Maloni all dished three assists in the contest.
LaRon Hinton, Zach Hart, and Tyler Mace all had two goals in the loss for UDC. Alan Singleton, Syrrus Nash, and Teilen Celentano also had goals.
Seton Hill's
John Hofseth got the home team on the board first, scoring an unassisted goal at the 13:21 mark in the first quarter. However, goals by Mace and Hinton gave UDC a 2-1 lead with 9:17 remaining. SHU would respond with goals by Moran at 1:01 and Scerbo at 0:55, but Hinton struck again with just 13 seconds remaining to tie the game up at 3-3 heading into the second.
In the second, Seton Hill regained the lead early when
Brett Craig scored just 20 seconds into play off of a
Zack Rusch assist. Goals by Rusch (13:46) and Maloni (11:43) increased the lead to 6-3, but UDC followed up with goals by Tyler Mace (11:14) and Zach Hart (10:33) to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The teams would trade goals before back-to-back goals by Moran ignited a 9-0 run that went well into the third quarter.
Following Moran's goals, Hofseth scored a man-up goal at 2:32 (Moran assst).
Sean Stanners gave SHU an 11-6 lead, scoring just under a minute before the break.
Logan Maloni opened up the scoring in the third with a goal off of a Hofseth assist at 11:08. Hofseth scored again at 8:40, followed by a Stanners goal at 3:17 that made it 14-6. Moran struck again at 2:12, and
Ryan Manbeck found the back of the net at 1:14 to give Seton Hill a 16-6 advantage going into the fourth.
After a
John Miller goal made it 17-6 in favor of SHU, the Firebirds finally broke the 9-0 run with a goal at the 11:02 mark in the fourth, sparking a 3-0 run for UDC that made the score 17-9 with 5:54 remaining in the game. The Griffins weren't done on the scored, though, as
Robert Hofseth and
Clayton Paysen tallied the first goals of their careers at the 4:00 and 3:07, respectively.
For the game, the Griffins registered season highs in Points (32), Goals (19), Assists (13), Shots (59), Shots on Goal (42) and Ground Balls (39).
