Seton Hill battled Gannon on a cold and blustery Friday afternoon in Erie in a PSAC West doubleheader. The Griffins had just four hits in a 5-0 game one loss. SHU then used two home runs, the last a three run shot from
Garret Vrbanic in the ninth, for a 4-1 win in game two. SHU is now 8-12 on the season and 3-3 in PSAC West play.
Gannon jumped on starter
Perry DellaValle in the bottom of the first inning of game one for three runs. Four of the first five Knights recorded hits to score the three runs. The Knights added an unearned run in the third inning when the fourth run scored on a passed ball.
In the sixth inning, SHU put runners on first and second with one out when
Sam Vilk walked and
Mark Colella singled, but two strikeouts ended the inning.
Colella and
Tyler Sullivan each had two hits in game one for the Griffins.
Griffin starter
Patrick Monteverde stranded runners on first and second with one out in the first inning of game two with a strikeout and fly out. With one out in the second inning, Colella homered into the bleachers in left field to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
Monteverde struck out the side in the second inning, stranding a runner at second with one out. In the third inning, the Knights had a runner at third with one out but Monteverde was again able to work out of the jam.
The Knights tied the score at one in the fourth inning with two hits and a sacrifice fly. The Griffins looked to take a lead in the sixth inning when
Tom McCarthy was hit by a pitch with one out then stole second and third base.
Colton Carney then walked and stole second to put runners on second and third base with one out. A strikeout and a groundout ended the inning.
In the sixth, Monteverde worked around an error by striking out the final two hitters of the inning to strand the runner at third.
The Griffins finally broke through in the ninth inning. After one out,
Parker Denny drew a walk. He then stole second. Sullivan walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Vrbanic then drilled a hanging 0-2 curve ball over the center field fence to give the Griffins a 4-1 lead.
Kenny Wells got a groundout and two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the game.
Wells earned the win with two perfect innings. He struck out four of the six batters he faced.
SHU will conclude the four game set on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Gannon at 1 PM.
