GREENSBURG, Pa - The Seton Hill University men's lacrosse team scored three in the first quarter and five more in the third to come away with a 10-6 win in their Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener against Wheeling Jesuit University Wednesday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
The Griffins improve to 5-1 (1-0 G-MAC) while Wheeling falls to 2-4 (0-1 G-MAC).
Zack Rusch led the offense with four goals for his second 3+ goal game of the season.
Sean Stanners added two goals, while
Jack Moran, Bretty Craig,
John Hofseth, and
Colin Torpey also scored in the victory. Moran and Hofseth dished two assists each.
The Griffins started out the game by scoring three straight to take a 3-0 lead by the 9:09 mark of the game.
Sean Stanners got the run started with an unassisted goal at 13:33 to make it 1-0.
Brett Craig fooled the WJU goalie with a nifty behind-the-back goal off of a John Hefseth assist at 10:03 to give SHu a 2-0 lead followed by
Colin Torpey scoring the first goal of his college career off of a
Logan Maloni assist to give the Griffins a 3-0 lead with 9:09 remaining in the first. Jamison Smith would get the Cardinals on the board with an unassisted goal and the Griffins would take a 3-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
Seton Hill looked to build on the lead in the second quarter when Rusch scored his first goal of the game just eight seconds into the quarter. But, the Cardinal goalie would notch six of his 20 saves in the period, conceding just the one goal as SHU took a 4-2 lead into the second half.
The Griffins would outscore the Cardinal, 5-1, in the third. Moran got the party started with a goal off of a
John Hofseth assist at 11:03, and Rusch would get a goal just over three minutes later from a
Ryan Manbeck assist to make it 6-2. After WJU's Dereck Downs found the back of the net to make it 6-3, Seton Hill reeled off three unanswered to end the third. Hofseth (6:24), Stanners (5:09), and Rusch (3:32) all scored during the run.
WJU started the fourth quarter with a 2-0 run of their own with unassisted goals from Getz and Lee at 12:16 and 11:31 to cut the SHU lead to four, 9-5. A goal by Rusch at 9:10 stopped the momentum and increased the lead to 10-5 and, after a WJU goal at 5:34, the Griffins would not concede another goal for the remaining time.
For the game, Seton Hill outshot Wheeling Jesuit, 44-27 (30-17 on goal). Jesuit committed 13 turnovers compared to nine for Seton Hill. The Griffins were good on 20-of-21 clear attempt, grabbed 24 ground balls, and won 11 face offs.
Max Eismann had 11 saves in the win.
Seton HIll returns to action on Saturday when they take on North Greensville University at Dick's Sporting Goods Field. This will be the first time that the two teams have met.
