SHU Defeats Wheeling Jesuit In Regular Season Finale

WHEELING, WV. - The Seton Hill University men's lacrosse team finished the 2017 regular season with their fifth straight victory, defeating Wheeling Jesuit University, 14-10, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Bishop Schmitt Stadium in Wheeling, WV. 

The Griffins will go into the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament with a 10-4 overall record. Wheeling Jesuit finish their season with a record of 6-8.

Jack Moran got things started for SHU, scoring an unassisted goal with 11:08 to go in the first quarter. Sean Stanners gave SHU a 2-0 lead when he scored an unassisted goal less than a minute later. After WJU's Getz scored, Jack Miller got an unassisted goal for himself to put Seton Hill ahead, 3-1. The Cardinals would bounce back to take the lead, scoring three straight goals before Bennett Johnson took a Sean Stanners assist to even the score at 4-4 with just 15 seconds to go in the first.

Wheeling would start the second quarter with goals at 11:28 and 10:38 to take a 6-4 lead. Sean Stanners would score his second unassisted goal of the game at 9:37 to pull the Griffins to within one, 6-5. After Getz scored his second of the game for WJU, the Griffins would roll off three in a row - Moran, John Miller, and Jack Miller - to regain the lead, 8-7, before going into halftime.

Seton Hill dominated the third quarter, scoring four straight to take a 12-8 lead. Bennett Johnson took a Jack Moran assisted and scored with 13:34 on the clock. Ryan McHugh then found the back of the net via a Bennett Johnson assist with 6:48 remaining. Adam Reimer scored an unassisted goal at 5:59. Jack Miller finished off the run with his third goal of the game, this time a man-up goal assisted by Adam Reimer. After a goal by Jesuit make it 12-9, Bennett Johnson scored again with just seven ticks on the clock to give Seton Hill a 13-9 advantage going into the final frame.

In the fourth, Wheeling Jesuit would get a goal with 6:51 remaining, but Bennett Johnson's unassisted goal with 1:02 to go sealed the victory for the Griffins. 

For the game, Seton Hill outshot Wheeling, 36-28 (27-21 on-goal). The Griffins committed 15 turnovers compared to six for the Cardinals. The two teams were perfect on clears with SHU going 15-for-15 and WJU going 17-for-17. Seton Hill held a 30-23 advantage in ground balls. The Griffins dominated the face offs, winning 19 compared to eight for Wheeling Jesuit. In extra man opportunities, Seton Hill was 3-for-7.

Max Eismann picked up the win, spending all 60:00 in the goal for SHU while registering eleven saves. Jake Lilly got the loss, spending 56:39 protecting the Cardinal net. Lilly grabbed 13 saves.

The Griffins will be the #3 seed in the G-MAC Tournament and will meet #2 Lake Erie in the Semifinal on Thursday in Erie.  Mercyhurst will serve as the host for the tournament.
