Junior right hander
Perry DellaValle was nearly unhittable in game one as the Griffins split a pair of PSAC West contests at #13 Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon. DellaValle finished game one with a one hitter and 14 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over the Lakers. Laker starter Russ Lamovec nearly matched DellaValle as he held the Griffins to four hits while striking 12 in a 4-0 win over the Griffins. SHU is now 15-8 overall and 3-3 in PSAC West play while the Lakers are 14-2 overall and 5-1 in PSAC West action.
Seton Hill got one guy on in each of the first two innings but could not push across a run as DellaValle and Matthew Minnick hooked up in a pitchers dual. DellaValle worked around two walks as he struck out the side in the second inning. SHU got two out walks in both the third and fourth but could not take advantage of the walks. The Griffins finally broke through in the fifth all after two outs.
Craig Lewis singled and stole second. He scored on a single from
Tyler Sullivan.
Mark Colella followed with a single to put runners on first and third.
Tom McCarthy made it 2-0 with an RBI single to center. DellaValle retired the Lakers in order in the fifth and sixth innings. Perry walked the leadoff hitter in the seventh but struck out the final three hitters of the game to complete the one hitter.
DellaValle improved to 1-0 on the season with the complete game effort. He allowed just the one hit while striking out 14 and walking four. Colella led the Griffins with two hits.
The first four hitters reached base for Mercyhurst in game two as they took an early 3-0 lead after just one inning of action. The Griffins offense did not respond as five of the first eight hitters were set down by strike out. The Lakers increased their lead to 4-0 with back to back doubles in the bottom of the fourth inning. SHU got two runners on with two outs in the sixth as
Jarrett Peters and Sullivan singled but a pop out ended the inning. SHU went quietly in the seventh with three strikeouts.
Zack Martinelli suffered the complete game loss. He gave up all four runs (three earned) while striking out four and walking none.
SHU will complete the four game set at home on Sunday afternoon.
