After getting walked off in game one, the Griffins responded with 16 runs on 14 hits for a split of the PSAC West opening series at Gannon on Friday afternoon. The Knights scored three times in their final two at bats for a 4-3 win in game one. The Griffins then scored five times in the first inning of game two and never looked back in a 16-2 game two win. SHU is now 12-6 overall and 1-1 in PSAC West action while the Knights are 11-6 overall and 1-1 in PSAC West play.
SHU got on the board in the top of the first inning with one run but left two on base.
Craig Lewis started the game off with a double.
Tyler Sullivan followed with a single to put runners on first and second. After a strikeout,
Adam Ferita walked to load the bases.
Tom McCarthy followed with a sacrifice fly to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Gannon tied the score at one with an unearned run in the bottom of the first. The Griffins took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth.
Jarrett Peters walked to start the inning. Lewis singled to put runners on first and second. Sullivan moved them up with a sac bunt.
Mark Colella followed with a sac fly to put the Griffins in front.
The Griffins extended their lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning. After two outs,
MP Buckley walked and moved up on a wild pitch. He scored on a single from
Bayley Jamanis. Gannon tied the score in the sixth inning with a two out, two run homer. SHU again got their first two runners on base in the seventh inning but a double play and flyout ended the threat. The Knights then got the winning run on base with another Griffin error on the leadoff batter. Two walks, one intentional, followed to load the bases setting up the game winning walk off single up the middle.
Perry DellaValle worked five innings in his first start of the season. He gave up 3 hits and 1 unearned run.
Craig Lewis was 3-4 in the game.
Seton Hill jumped all over Gannon with five unearned runs in the top of the first of game two. McCarthy drove in two runs with a double and Buckley added a two RBI single in the first. The Griffins added three more runs in the third on a three run shot from Buckley. SHU put another crooked number on the board in the fourth as they increased their lead to 12-0. Colella, Jamanis, McCarthy and Lewis all drove in runs in the inning.
Jamanis singled in another run in the fifth to increase their lead to 13-0. Lewis hit a bomb that landed on the press box in center field in the sixth as SHU built their lead to 14-0. Ryan Wardropped closed out the scoring with a two run bomb in the seventh that gave SHU a 16-2 lead.
Zack Martinelli upped his record to 3-1 with 6 innings of four hit ball. He had a one hitter going until the bottom of the sixth when he gave up 3 hits and 2 runs. Lewis, Sullivan, Colella, Jamanis, McCarthy and Buckley each had two hits in the win.
SHU will return to action on Saturday when they take on Gannon to complete their four game set.
