GREENSBURG, Pa. - The sixth ranked Seton Hill University men's lacrosse team topped tenth ranked Mercy College (NY), 14-10, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
The win evens Seton Hill's record to 1-1 on the season. Mercy slips to 3-1 overall.
Mercy got the game started with goals by Tommy McPartland (13:22), Bobby Chillianis (8:21), and Ryan MacSpadyen (2:05) to go up by a 3-0 score. Seton Hill avoided a scoreless first quarter when
Jay Scerbo scored his first goal of the young season off of a
Jack Moran assist with just 1:56 remaining in the quarter.
Seton Hill started off the second quarter on the right foot with unassisted goals by
Shane Pettke (11:15) and
Adam Reimer (5:36) to tie the game at 3-3. A goal by McPartland put Mercy back on top, 4-3. However, goals by
Jack Miller (2:28) and
John Miller (1:03) gave SHU their first lead of the game, 5-4. Pettke kept the momentum going in SHU's favor, scoring with just nine seconds remaining before halftime to give the Griffins a 6-4 advantage.
In the third,
Bennett Johnson scored an unassisted goal less than a minute into the quarter. Kevin McNally fired back just a few minutes later with an unassisted goal to make it 7-5 in SHU's favor.
John Hofseth scored off of a
Bennett Johnson assist to push the lead out to 8-5 with 9:58 remaining in the quarter. After a Mercy goal, Seton Hill went on a 3-0 run on goals scored by
Adam Reimer (5:36),
Sean Stanners (3:44), and
Bennett Johnson (2:49). Chris Martinez ended the third quarter on a high note for Mercy, scoring just third thirty seconds to go to make it 11-7 in favor of Seton Hill.
In the fourth quarter,
Jack Moran (13:10) and
Adam Reimer (9:48) scored goals to put SHU ahead, 13-7. Mercy would then go on a 3-0 run behind two goals by McNally and another by Nick Wilcox.
Jack Miller would stop the Maverick run with an unassisted goal with less than two minutes remaining and the Griffins held on for the 14-10 win.Â
For the game, Seton Hill edged Mercy on shots, 34-33 (26-20 on-goal). SHU committed 13 turnovers compared to 11 for Mercy. Seton Hill was 21-for-25 on clears while Mercy was 16-for-17. SHU won 22 faceoffs, compared to just 6 for Mercy.
Adam Reimer led SHU with three goals. Bennett Johson,
Shane Pettke, and
Jack Miller added two goals apiece.
Jay Scerbo,
Jack Moran,
John Hofseth,
Sean Stanners, and
John Miller all added goals in the game. Moran had two assists, while Reimer, Johnson, Stanners,
Brett Craig, and
Riley Martin had assists.
Merritt Bailey got the win, spending all 60:00 in the net for SHU. Ryan Gibbons picked up the loss for Mercy.
Seton Hill will jump into G-MAC action next weekend when they host Alderson Broaddus University. That game is set to start at 12:00 PM.
