The Griffins opened up their weekend at the Kutztown University Duals with two matches on Friday evening against East Stroudsburg and Minot State. SHU won six of ten matches for a 22-18 win over East Stroudsburg to open the evening. ESU was ranked eighth in the region. The Griffins closed out the evening with a 28-13 win over Minot State. SHU improved to 5-5 in dual matches on the season.
Alan Diltz opened the ESU match with a 8-6 decision victory over the #4 ranked wrestler in the region, giving the Griffins the early 3-0 lead. ESU then won the next two matches to take a 9-3 lead after three matches. SHU then won four straight contests to take a 19-9 lead.
Ty Lydic started the run with a major decision victory.
Zach Voytek followed with a tight 7-6 decision win at 157 pounds.
Damon Greenwald won his match by forfeit before
Zach Mattucci closed out the run with a 4-0 decision win. The Warriors then won the next two matches to cut the Griffins lead to 19-18 with the heavyweight match set to decide the outcome.
Lou Maser gave the Griffin the win with a 8-5 win, to give SHU a 22-18 win.
Diltz got the Griffins off to a good start in their second match of the night with a 20-1 tech fall win. SHU forfeited the next bout before
Joey Alessandro won by decision (11-5) to put the Griffins back ahead 8-6. Lydic followed with his second win of the night, this one by an 8-5 score. Minot State cut the Griffins lead to 11-10 with a major decision win at 157 pounds. SHU then ran off four straight matches to ice the win.
Tanner Druck won his match at 165 pounds by a 5-2 score. Mattucci won his second match of the evening, this one by fall (3:15) to give SHU a 20-10 lead.
Billy Bowlen earned a tech fall (21-6) win at 184 pounds and
Morris Lawson closed out the SHU wins with an 8-6 win at 197 pounds.
SHU will continue at the Kutztown Duals on Saturday when they take on American International and Tiffin.
