Bittel Spectacular as Griffins Survive and Advance at PSAC Tourney

Mike Bittel kept the Griffins alive with a spectacular performance on the mound and the Griffins added insurance runs in the ninth as they survived and advanced in the PSAC Tournament.  The Griffins defeated California by a 6-1 score to advance.  SHU is now 37-15 overall on the season.

Seton Hill got two out base runners in each of the first three innings of the game but could not advance any of the runners past first base. The Griffins had their best threat of the game in the fourth inning when Anthony Fanelli and Mark Colella singled to start off the inning.  A fielder's choice, a pop up to short and a strikeout ended the SHU threat as they were not able to advance a base runner.

The Griffins finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning.  Garret Vrbanic singled to start the inning.  After an out, Chris Miller's infield single put runners on first and third.  With a 1-2 count, the Griffins executed a perfect double steal.  As Miller took off for second, Vrbanic broke for home and caught the Vulcans off guard.

SHU added to their lead in the sixth.  Colella led off with a single and moved to second on a Colton Carney sacrifice bunt.  Colella moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Thayne Mitrik's two out RBI double.  The Vulcans got that run right back in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff homer.  Mitrik made a spectacular play to end the inning stranding two runners and saving a run.

The ninth inning was finally the inning the Griffins were able to put the game away.  After an out, Vrbanic singled to left center field.  Matt Malacane followed with a single to put runners on first and second.  Vrbanic stole third to put runners on first and third.  Miller added an RBI single to increase the SHU lead to 3-1.  Zac Heide walked to load the bases.  After a pop up Taylor Schmidt cleared the bases with a double over the left fielder's head to extend the SHU lead to 6-1.

Bittel went the distance, giving up just two hits in the complete game effort.  He allowed a homer in the sixth and a single in the seventh.  He struck out 7 and walked just two.

Miller led the Griffins at the plate with a three hit day.  Vrbanic and Colella each added two hits.

Seton Hill will now take on the loser of the East Stroudsburg/Millersville game in an elimination game at 9:30 AM on Tuesday.
