Griffins Survive and Advance to Final Day of PSAC Tourney

The Griffins used a stellar starting pitching performance from Tyler Morder and a three hit day from Sam Mattei as they survived and advanced for the second time in the day with a 6-4 victory over West Chester.  SHU improves to 39-15 on the season.

Seton Hill got their leadoff man on base in each of the first two innings but failed to score in either of the innings.  Matt Malacane singled to lead off the game but was thrown out trying to steal second base.  Anthony Fanelli doubled to lead off the second but did not reach third base as the Griffins could not advance him.

The Griffins were finally able to take advantage of a leadoff hit in the third.  Sam Mattei singled to lead off the inning and scored when Zac Heide homered over the left field wall to give SHU a 2-0 lead.  SHU got another leadoff hit in the fifth but stranded two runners on base in the inning.

SHU used some two out magic in the sixth inning to extend their lead.  Adam Ferita doubled with two outs.  He scored when Tyler Sullivan singled thru the right side of the infield.  Sullivan moved to second on an error and then scored when Mattei singled into center field giving SHU a 4-0 lead.

West Chester finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning when they scored twice on a two out, two RBI single.  Seton Hill got those two runs right back in the bottom of the seventh.  After an out, Heide, Fanelli and Colton Carney singled thru the left side of the infield with Heide scoring, giving the Griffins a 5-2 lead.  Taylor Schmidt then singled thru the left side to extend the lead to 6-2.

The Golden Rams got those two runs back in the top of the eighth inning on a two run homer to trim the SHU lead to 6-4.  Seton Hill went 1-2-3 in the eighth but Jesse Cooper earned his second save of the day with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Morder earned the win with seven innings of four hit ball where he gave up two runs.  He struck out five and walked none.  Cooper earned his fourth save of the season with a hitless 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.  He struck out one in the save.  Mattei and Fanelli led the offense with 3 hits each.  Heide also finished with two hits.

Seton Hill will take on West Chester on Wednesday morning with a spot in the PSAC title on the line.
