Griffins Take #1 Seed Millersville to the Brink but Fall 2-1 in Atlantic Regional

Seton Hill fought to the last out against #1 seed Millersville and Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year Brandon Miller but it was not quite enough as the Marauders sent the Griffins to the losers bracket with a 2-1 victory in a great baseball game in the Division II Atlantic Regional at Owls Field in West Lawn, PA.  SHU drops to 40-17 on the season.

After both starters had 1-2-3 innings in the first, the Griffins got the first runner of the game as Mark Colella reached on an error after two outs.  Colella was stranded at first base.  Millersville had two runners on in the second after two outs but Mike Bittel was able to get a strikeout to end the threat.

Seton Hill got a leadoff single from Matt Malacane in the top of the fifth inning but Millersville starter Brandon Miller was able to get three strikeouts to end the inning, leaving Malacane at second base.  Bittel was able to dance thru the raindrops in the bottom of the fifth.  He stranded two runners at second and third base after one out.  Mike got a one out pop out and then a line out to short to end the inning.  Garret Vrbanic singed after one out in the sixth but was caught stealing for the second out of the inning and Miller got a strikeout to end the inning.

Millersville was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Three of the first four hitters in the inning reached on hits and the Marauders were able to push two runners across and take a 2-0 lead over the Griffins.  Joe Shaffer relieved Bittel in the seventh and was able to get out of a first and third no out situation with a ground out and a huge 3-6-1 double play to end the inning and keep the score at 2-0.

Tyler Sullivan reached on a bunt single and moved to second on an error with two outs was stranded there after another strikeout ended the threat.  Shaffer was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning.  He got a foul out and a force play to end the threat.

The Griffins put up a fight in the ninth but two spectacular plays by the Millersville defense preserved the lead for the Marauders.  Vrbanic led off the inning with his second hit of the game.  Zac Heide then hit a hard ground ball to the left side that the Millersville second baseman made a nice play on to force Vrbanic at second.  Back to back singles from Chris Miller and Anthony Fanelli to load the bases with one out.  Malacane then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Heide and cut the lead to 2-1.  Colella then hit a sinking liner in the right center field gap that the Marauders right fielder made an incredible diving play in the gap to save the game for the Marauders.

Garret Vrbanic was the lone Griffin with two hits in the game.  Mike Bittel was the hard luck loser in the game.  He went 6+ innings, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 5.

The Griffins will try and keep their season alive on Saturday morning when they take on East Stroudsburg in elimination game at 11 AM.
