SHU Snaps Three Game Skid with Win at Walsh

Seton Hill continued ECAC play on Saturday afternoon in Canton, OH where they battled Walsh.  The Griffins outscored the Cavaliers 5-3 in the second half in route to an 11-9 victory, snapping a three game losing skid.  SHU is now 7-3 overall and 2-2 in ECAC play. 

The Griffins came out of the gates flying, scoring the first four goals of the contest.  Erik Hultgren got the Griffins on the board with an unassisted goal 1:43 into the first quarter.  Zach Hartmann scored from Garret Howell giving the Griffins a 2-0 lead midway thru the first period.  Hultgren and Hartmann scored less than a minute apart to push the SHU lead to 4-0 with just over two minutes left in the period.  The Cavaliers got a goal right at the buzzer to cut the SHU lead to 4-1 after one period of play. 

Walsh scored the first goal of the second period with 10 minutes to play in the half.  Nick Neferis scored an unassisted goal one minute later to give SHU a 5-2 lead. The Cavaliers then scored the next three goals to tie the score at five with 2:53 to play.  Two of the three goals were man up goals.  Riley Martin gave SHU a 6-5 lead with 1:26 to play but the Cavs tied the score at six with a goal with 28 seconds to play in the half.  Walsh outshot the Griffins 19-14 in the first half. 

The Cavs scored less than three minutes into the second half to take their only lead of the game at 7-6.  SHU responded with four straight goals to take control of the contest.  Hartmann scored from Howell at the 6:42 mark of the quarter to tie the score at seven.  Hunter Hayes scored a man up goal with another assist from Howell that gave SHU an 8-7 lead after three quarters of action. 

Hartmann scored an unassisted goal early in the fourth quarter and Hayes scored from Hultgren with 7:49 left in the game and SHU led 10-7.  Walsh answered with two goals to trim the lead to 10-9 with 2:10 to play but Hartmann scored with 1:15 to play to put the game away.

Hartmann led the offense with 5 goals.  Hayes and Hultgren each scored twice in the win. Howell added 4 assists.  Merritt Bailey earned his seventh win of the season with 10 saves in net.

SHU continues ECAC play on Thursday when they host Ohio Valley and then travel to Indianapolis next Saturday.
