Seton Hill found themselves down 6-5 midway thru the second period and saw their ECAC and NCAA playoff hopes slipping away. The Griffins responded with an eight goal run to turn the one goal deficit into a 13-6 ECAC victory at Alderson Broaddus on Wednesday afternoon. SHU improves to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in ECAC play. The Griffins conclude ECAC play with a 5-3 record and now await the results from the weekend's games to see if they qualify for the ECAC Tournament.
Alderson Broaddus came out of the gates flying, scoring twice in the first 46 seconds of the contest. Ten minutes later the Battlers increased their lead to 3-0. The Griffins finally got on the scoreboard with 1:21 to play in the quarter on a goal from
Hunter Hayes.
Garret Howell scored on the power play to open the scoring in the second half off a pass from
Zack Rusch 1:12 into the second quarter. AB answered that goal less than a minute later.
Zach Hartmann scored his first goal of the game with just over nine minutes left in the half, cutting the lead to 4-3. Rusch followed with his first of the game to tie the score at four with 2:15 to play in the half. AB closed out the first half scoring with a goal with 27 seconds left in the half, taking a 5-4 halftime lead.
Hartmann netted his second of the game to tie the score at five with 10:43 left in the third.
Brett Craig assisted on the goal. AB took their final lead of the game with a goal with 8:55 to play in the quarter. From that point on it was all Griffins as they scored the final eight goals of the game. Rusch tied the game with 5:40 to play in the third.
Erik Hultgren scored his first of the game, giving the Griffins their first lead of the game with two minutes left in the quarter. Hartmann scored his third of the game to extend the SHU lead to 8-6 with 44 seconds left in the quarter. Howell assisted on the goal.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Griffins as the outscored the Battlers 5-0. Just over three minutes into the quarter Rusch opened the scoring. Hartmann and
Jack Moran scored 24 seconds apart to push the Griffins lead to 11-6. Howell assisted on Hartmann's goal and Hartmann assisted on Moran's. Hartmann added his fifth of the game off a pass from Howell and
Brett Craig scored his first goal of the season to close out the scoring.
Hartmann led the offense with a 6 goal game (5 goals and 1 assist). Rusch finished the game with 3 goals and an assist. Howell also had 6 points on a goal and 5 assists. Craig finished with a goal and an assist. Craig also caused 3 turnovers and added 4 ground balls.
Anthony Peluso was 11-21 in faceoffs.
Merritt Bailey finished the game with 9 saves.
SHU will close out the regular season with a matchup at Mercy on Saturday afternoon.
