SHU Takes Down Mercy In Regular Season Finale, 12-8

DOBBS FERRY, NY. - The Seton Hill University men's lacrosse team earned a 12-8 victory in the 2016 regular season finale at Mercy College, 12-8, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

SHU improved to 11-4 overall on the season. Mercy falls to 9-5 overall.

Mercy College struck first, scoring the first two goals of the game. However, goals by Garret Howell and Zach Hartmann tied the game at two apiece to out the first quarter.

Robert Rossi started the second quarter off on the right foot with a goal for the Mavericks, but a Jack Miller goal knotted the game at 3-3 with 7:31 on the clock. Mercy grabbed a 4-3 lead on the back of a MacSpadyen goal with 3:10 to go. Jack Hartmann tied the game with 2:22 remaing and Zack Rusch scored (Jack Moran assist) put one through with 9 seconds to go to give Seton Hill a 5-4 lead going into the break.

Rusch scored again early in the third quarter to put SHU up, 6-4. Mercy's Nick Wilcox's goal made it a one-goal game, 6-5, with 8:40 on the clock. However, Seton Hill would rattle off three goals to take a 9-5 lead going into the final quarter. Erik Hultgren scored two of the three with Jack Miller adding one in-between.

The fourth quarter started off with Hartmann scoring a man-up goal off of a Hunter Hayes assist with 14:38 on the clock. After Mercy scored two straight, Jack Moran put one in the back of the net with 3:25 remaining. Mercy would answer with a goal by Chillianis, but Hultgren put the game away on goal with 1:24 left in the game for the final score, 12-8.

For the game, Seton Hill outshot Mercy, 41-29 (22-20 on-goal). SHU won 19 face offs compared to 5 for Mercy. Seton Hill picked up 31 ground balls while Mercy had 28.

Erik Hultgren and Zach Hartmann led the Griffins with three goals apiece. Zack Rusch and Jack Miller add two each. Jack Moran and Garret Howell had goals in the game. Hunter Hayes and Howell dished out two assists each with Moran adding one. Merritt Bailey had 12 saves on 29 shots faced.

Robert Rossi and Nick Wilcox led Mercy with two goals apiece. Chillianis, MacSpadyen, McLachlan, and Littleton each added one goal. Rossi, MacSpadyen, and Kyle Stockton had assists in the game. AJ Pellati grabbed 5 saves on 19 shots in the first 30 minutes in goal. Michael Schneider also had five saves but allowed seven goals in the final 30 minutes.

Seton Hill will now have to wait and see if they have done enough to earn a post-season bid.
