Seton Hill hosted Lindenwood University in the ECAC opener for the Griffins on Saturday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Field. The Griffins were looking for revenge against the Lions who ended the Griffins season with two consecutive losses including one in the ECAC Semifinals. It did not look good early for the Griffins as they trailed 8-3 but SHU ran off eight straight goals in route to a 13-9 victory. SHU improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in ECAC play.
Lindenwood opened the scoring 2:22 into the contest to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Griffins responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead with 11:11 left in the quarter.
Zach Hartmann scored the first goal from
Nick Neferis. Neferis then won the ensuing faceoff and scored off the faceoff at the 11:11 mark of the quarter. The Lions scored the final two goals of the quarter and took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.
The Lions continued their run with three straight goals at the start of the second quarter and led 6-2 with 9:33 left in the half.
Erik Hultgren ended the run with an unassisted goal at the 7:30 mark of the quarter. Lindenwood followed that goal with two of their own and led 8-3 with 4:47 to play in the half. From that point on it was all Griffins as they would score the final two goals of the half. Hartmann scored from Hultgren with 1:55 to play and
Garret Howell scored a man up goal 39 seconds later as the Griffins trailed 8-5 at the half.
Seton Hill dominated the third quarter, scoring all four of the goals in the quarter. Hartmann opened the second half scoring 37 seconds into the half with a goal from Howell. Just over a minute later,
Riley Martin trimmed the Lions lead to 8-7.
Sean Stanners tied the score at 8 with an unassisted goal with 7:49 left in the quarter.
Shane Pettke scored from
Jack Moran with 6:21 left in the quarter giving the Griffins their first lead since early in the game at 9-8. SHU won the faceoff battle 4-1 in the quarter and led in shots 14-5.
Just 31 seconds into the fourth quarter, Hartmann scored a man up goal from Howell increasing the SHU lead to 10-8. Thirty four seconds later Neferis scored from Howell to push the lead to 11-8 and complete the 8-0 run for the Griffins. The Griffin defense held Lindenwood scoreless for 23:43 over that run as the Lions did not score a goal until the 11:04 mark of the fourth quarter cutting the SHU lead to 11-9. Merritt Bailey made 8 of his saves in the fourth quarter preserving the win.
Lindenwood outshot the Griffins in the contest 49-47. SHU forced 16 turnovers and turned the ball over 12 times. The Lions won the ground ball battle 34-28 while SHU won 11-24 faceoffs. The Griffins were 2-9 in man up opportunities.
Zach Hartmann led the SHU offense with 4 goals and 1 assist. Nick Nefaris,
Erik Hultgren and
Garret Howell each added 2 goals. Howell also finished with 3 assists.
Merritt Bailey finished the game with 17 saves.
SHU will return to action on Wednesday when they host Florida Tech.
