Griffins Close Out Spring Trip with 10-3 Win

The Griffin baseball team closed out their 2016 spring trip with a matchup with Winona State in Winter Haven, FL on Saturday afternoon.  The Seton Hill offense exploded for 9 runs in its final three at bats in route to a come from behind 10-3 victory.  SHU improves to 7-4 overall and Winona State falls to 2-6 overall.

Winona State got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning when they scored three runs on four hits to take a 3-0 lead.  Seton Hill got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning.  After one out Chris Miller doubled.  He moved to third on a Zac Heide single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Malacane.  Seton Hill took the lead for good in the sixth.  Heide singled after two outs.  Malacane moved Heide to third with a double.  Both runners scored when Adam Ferita reached on an error.  Mark Colella then singled in Ferita to give the Griffins a 4-3 lead. 

The Griffins added on with three more runs in the seventh.  Anthony Fanelli led off the inning getting hit by a pitch.  Miller then reached on an error.  After a pickoff, Heide singled to put runners on first and second.  Malacane then cleared the bases with a three run homer to increase the SHU lead to 7-3.  SHU closed out the scoring with 3 runs in the eighth inning.  Phillip Pisarcik led off the eighth with a walk.  He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Garret VrbanicTyler Sullivan singled in Pisarcik and Miller added two to the scoreboard with a two run shot.

Don McWreath earned the win with four shutout innings of relief.  He gave up just one hit and struck out one.  Zac Heide led the offense going 4-5 with a double and 2 runs scored.  Chris Miller, Matt Malacane and Mark Colella each added two hits.  Malacane drove in 4 runs while Miller drove in two.

SHU will play their home opener on Wednesday when they host Davis & Elkins in a single 9 inning contest.
