Seton Hill took on Notre Dame (OH) in an Atlantic Region battle in Winter Haven, FL on Friday afternoon. The Griffins won a wild first game by the score of 18-14. SHU led 8-0 early in the contest and trailed 14-13 late in the game. SHU completed the sweep with a cleaner 4-1 victory in game two. SHU is now 6-4 overall while Notre Dame (OH) falls to 4-6 on the season.
The Griffins got on the board in the top of the first of game one.
Garret Vrbanic led off with a single and stole second. Vrbanic then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from
Chris Miller. SHU added 7 runs in the top of the second inning.
Matt Malacane led of the inning with a single.
Mark Colella followed with a single moving Malacane to third. Vrbanic and
Tyler Sullivan were both hit by a pitch forcing in a run.
Anthony Fanelli and
Zac Heide then followed with two RBI hits. Malacane picked up his second hit of the inning with an RBI double that gave SHU an 8-0 lead. Notre Dame answered with 6 runs of their own to trim the Griffins lead to 8-6 after two innings of play.
Seton Hill added two runs to their lead in the third when Miller drove in a run and a second run scored on an error. The Falcons took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Colton Carney put the Griffins back in the lead with a two out, two RBI double in the top of the fifth inning. Sullivan added to the Griffins lead in the top of the sixth with an RBI single. Notre Dame came right back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 14-13 lead.
Miller led off the seventh inning with a double.
Aaron Previsky pinch ran for Miller and moved to third on a wild pitch. Heide then drove in Previsky with a single to tie the score at 14. Carney doubled and both scored when
Sam Vilk came through with pinch hit two RBI single to give the Griffins a 16-14 lead. Vrbanic and Sullivan added insurance runs in the seventh with RBI hits.
Jesse Cooper gave up a leadoff hit in the seventh but retired the final three hitters.
Tyler Morder earned the win.
Zac Heide led the offense with 4 hits. He also added 3 RBI.
Matt Malacane finished the game with two hits.
Game two was nothing like game one as
Perry DellaValle and Josh Armbruster hooked up in a pitchers dual. The Falcons led off the game with a double and a single to take a quick 1-0 lead. SHU tied the score in the bottom of the third.
Adam Ferita was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Garret Vrbanic.
Tyler Sullivan lined a single to left field to tie the score at one. SHU took the lead in the fifth inning. Sullivan doubled with one out and scored on an infield single by
Zac Heide. SHU tacked on in the sixth when
Adam Ferita hit a ball off the 410 sign in center field and raced around the bases for a two run inside the park homer. DellaValle gave up two hits to start the seventh but got two strikeouts and a groundout to end the game.
DellaValle earned the win with a complete game seven hitter. Perry struck out 7 in the win.
Tyler Sullivan was the lone Griffin with two hits.
SHU will close out their spring trip on Saturday morning with a 9 inning contest against Winona State.
