Seton Hill and California (PA) concluded their four game set with a doubleheader in Greensburg on Saturday afternoon. SHU rallied for a 9-5 win in game one but dropped game two by a 6-2 score. SHU is now 17-8 on the season and 5-3 in PSAC West play.
California took a 1-0 lead after two batters on a triple and a single. The Griffins tied the score in the first inning. After an out,
Anthony Fanelli reached on an error and then stole second. He scored on a
Zac Heide single. Cal used another triple and single in the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Vulcans increased their lead to 4-1 with a two run homer in the top of the third. California extended their lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning.
Seton Hill got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth.
Tyler Sullivan led of the inning with a single and
Adam Ferita drew a walk. Both moved up on a
Sam Mattei sacrifice bunt. Both runs scored when
Garret Vrbanic reached on an error. The Griffins then tied the game in the fifth. Heide led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Matt Malacane.
Mark Colella tripled to score Heide. SHU tied the game at five on a perfectly executed squeeze play by Sullivan scoring Colella.
SHU retook the lead with a four spot in the sixth. Vrbanic singled to open the inning. He moved to third when
Anthony Fanelli reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Malacane singled thru the left side of the infield to drive in Vrbanic and Fanelli. Sullivan singled in
Chris Miller to push the lead to 8-5 and Malacane scored during a pickoff attempt pushing the lead to 9-5.
Kevin Neumann earned his second win of the season with 4 scoreless innings of relief. He gave up 4 hits and struck out 2.
Zac Heide and
Tyler Sullivan each had 3 hits.
The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two. After an out, Malacane doubled and moved to third on a single from
Sam Vilk. Sullivan drove in Malacane with a single. California tied the score at one in the top of the third. The Vulcans took the lead with a leadoff homer in the fourth. California took a 6-2 lead in the seventh, taking advantage of two SHU errors. Vrbanic doubled in a run in the seventh.
Matt Malacane led the offense with two hits.
SHU returns to action on Wednesday when they host Lock Haven in a non conference doubleheader.
