Seton Hill returned to PSAC West play on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against California (PA) at Consol Energy Park. The Griffins used the bat of
Chris Miller and the arm of
Perry DellaValle in route to a 4-0 win in game one. Cal earned the split with a 4-2 win in game two. SHU is now 16-7 overall and 4-2 in PSAC West action.
Seton Hill loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third.
Garret Vrbanic led off the inning with a single. Sam Mattei was hit by a pitch and
Tyler Sullivan reached on a bunt single. After a strikeout,
Chris Miller put the Griffins on the scoreboard with a line drive grand slam over the left field fence.
That's all the offense Griffin pitcher
Perry DellaValle would need. DellaValle went the distance, giving up just 2 hits. He threw only 67 pitches and struck out 2. DellaValle improves to 4-0 on the season and drops his ERA on the season to 0.23.
SHU got on the scoreboard first in game two. The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Mattei led off the inning with a double down the right field line. After a strikeout,
Anthony Fanelli was hit by a pitch.
Chris Miller then hit a ball into the hole at shortstop and when the throw was late at second, Mattei scored from third to give SHU a 1-0 lead.
California responded with four runs in the bottom of the third on just two hits to take a 4-1 lead over the Griffins. SHU threatened in the fourth when
Matt Malacane doubled to open the inning. He moved to third on a fly out and then looked to have scored on another fly out but was called out for leaving early.
SHU threatened in the seventh. After one out, Vrbanic reached on an error and scored when pinch hitter
MP Buckley doubled in Vrbanic to trim the lead to 4-2. Vulcan starter Mick Fennell then got the final two Griffins to end the threat.
Matt Malacane had two hits for the Griffins.
The teams will complete the four game set with a doubleheader in Greensburg on Saturday afternoon.
