Baseball Splits a Pair in Florida

The baseball team opened their spring trip with a pair of games in Auburndale, FL.  SHU dropped the first game by a 6-3 score and then escaped with an extra innings 9-6 victory over WV Wesleyan.  SHU is now 2-3 on the season.

Lewis opened the scoring with 1 run in the top of the first.  SHU answered with a run of their own in the first.  Garret Vrbanic led off with a double and scored on an RBI ground out from Chris Miller.  Lewis added three in the eighth for a 4-1 lead.  SHU got two back in their half of the eighth.  Tyler Sullivan and Mark Colella each singled.  Sullivan scored when Colton Carney doubled but Colella was thrown out at the plate.  Sam Vilk then singled in Carney for the Griffins third run.  Lewis added two in the ninth to put the game away.

SHU scored one in the top of the first of game two.  Vrbanic was hit by a pitch, Miller singled and Carney and Ryan Wardropper walked forcing in a run.  Wesleyan got two runs in their half of the first.  SHU tied the score in the second when Vrbanic singled and stole second and scored on a Sullivan double.  Adam Ferita made it 3-2 Griffins with an RBI single in the third.  Vrbanic scored his third run of the game in the sixth when he walked, stole a base and scored on another Sullivan double.  SHU made it 6-2 in the eighth.  Zac Heide reached and scored on an error and Colella drove in a run with an RBI single.  Wesleyan tied the game with four runs in the ninth.  Anthony Fanelli drove in two runs in the tenth to give the Griffins a 9-6 win.

SHU returns to action on Monday when they take on Tiffin.
