The Griffins magical run through the WVIAC Tournament ended one victory short of a conference title with the Griffins falling by a 65-54 score in the WVIAC Championship Game. Seton Hill ends the season with a 19-13 record.
Fairmont State opened the game on a 6-0 run. The Griffins responded with a 13-0 run of their own to take a 13-6 lead with 12:11 to play in the half.
Paige Alviani scored 6 points during the run. FSU battled back to cut the lead to 15-12 at the 7 minute mark. A three pointer and a layin from Alviani pushed the lead back to 20-12. A three pointer from
Tiara Stossel and baskets from
Meghan Mastroianni and
Clare Berenato gave SHU a 27-16 lead with 1:42 to play. Fairmont scored the final 4 points of the half and trailed 27-20 at the half.
A quick start to the second half gave the Griffins a 32-20 lead at the 18:42 mark, forcing a FSU timeout. Berenato hit a jumper and
Katie Gattuso drained a three. From that point on it was all Fairmont State as the Griffins were unable to get any defensive stops. FSU went on a 26-6 run to turn the 12 point deficit into an 8 point lead (46-38) at the 8:24 mark of the second half. A three pointer from
Mallory Sanner cut the FSU lead to 48-43 at the 7:25 mark. Gattuso then hit a three to make it 55-49 with just under 5 minutes to play. The Griffins continued to battle but Fairmont made their free throws down the stretch to earn the championship.
Paige Alviani led the Griffins with 18 points. She also added 5 steals and 3 assists.
Katie Gattuso finished with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.
Clare Berenato ended her Griffin career with 8 points.
Tiara Stossel added 6 points and
Mallory Sanner finished with 5 points and 8 rebounds.
Alviani, Stossel and Gattuso were all named to the All Tournament Team and Gattuso was awarded the sportsmanship award.
