The Seton Hill women's basketball team opened its 2013-14 season with a road trip to WV Tech in Montgomery, WV. SHU was able to survive on the road and record a 90-76 victory behind 25 points from
Paige Alviani to improve to 1-0 on the season.
The game was tight early with WV Tech coming out of the gates shooting the lights out and Tech held an 18-13 lead with 12:55 to play in the first half. The Griffins were able to battle back and after a basket from
Mallory Sanner and two free throws from
Sara Pilarski took a 19-18 lead with 11:07 left in the half. The Griffin run continued as they took a 25-18 lead with 8:50 to play. Tech battled back and took a 33-32 lead with 3 minutes to play in the half. A basket from
Tiara Stossel gave the Griffins the lead back at the 2:45 mark. That was a lead they would not give up again in the first half as they took a 43-38 halftime lead.
Paige Alviani and
Katie Gattuso each had 10 points in the half.
Meghan Mastroianni added 8 points.
The Griffins started to take control of the contest as they opened up a 54-47 lead with 14:35 to play on a Stossel three pointer. Tech closed the score to 55-53 with 12:15 to play. A basket from Pilarski and a three point play from Sanner pushed the lead back to seven at 60-53 with 11:45 left. Tech answered with a 7-4 run to trim the lead to 64-60 with 9:09 to play. WV Tech tied the score with a three pointer with 4:20 to play. SHU answered with baskets from Alviani and
Kelly Brennan to take a four point lead with 3:35 to play. Alviani pushed the lead to 80-73 with a three point play at the 2:50 mark. Alviani put the game away with a dagger three at the shot clock buzzer to give the Griffins an 85-74 lead with just over a minute to play.
Paige Alviani led the Griffins with 25 points.
Katie Gattuso followed with 17 points. Gattuso also added 9 rebounds.
Tiara Stossel was the third Griffin in double figures with 16 points.
Meghan Mastroianni and
Kelly Brennan each added 10 points.
Seton Hill will travel to West Chester, PA this weekend for the Carol Eckman Tourney. The Griffins will play the University of the Sciences on Friday at 5 PM.
