The Griffin wrestling program took part in the third annual Wendy's Mid-Atlantic Duals hosted by Ashland University on Sunday afternoon. Seton Hill dropped its first match of the day when they fell by a 38-14 score to Ashland. The Griffins responded with a 28-18 victory over Belmont Abbey. SHU then suffered a heartbreaking loss to East Stroudsburg. SHU built a 22-0 lead after four matches but lost the final six matches and fell by a 23-22 score.
AJ Fisher got the Griffins on the scoreboard in the Ashland match with a technical fall (16-1) victory at 141 pounds. That cut the Ashland lead to 11-5.
Nick Nichols followed with a 9-7 decision victory to cut the Ashland lead to 11-8. Ashland responded with two victories before
Zach Benzio recorded a pin (5:25) at 174 pounds.
Seton Hill won the first 7 matches against Belmont Abbey.
Stephen Smith got the Griffins going with a 9-2 decision victory at 125 pounds.
Mike Grant followed with a 4-0 decision victory at 133 pounds. Fisher picked up a quick pinfall in just 34 seconds and Nichols won by forfeit.
Adam Moranduzzo kept the momentum going with a 9-7 decision victory at 157 pounds.
Brett Smith then won by major decision (13-3) and
Randall Wagner closed out the Griffin victories with a 13-6 decision at 174 pounds.
The Griffins built a 22-0 lead over East Stroudsburg after four matches. Smith earned a pinfall in 51 seconds and Grant followed with a pinfall at 3:36 to give the Griffins a quick 12-0 lead. Fisher made it back to back to back pins with a pinfall at 2:51 of the 141 pound match. Nichols gave SHU a 22-0 lead with an 8-0 major decision victory. The Griffins could not win another match and East Stroudsburg rallied for the 23-22 win.
Seton Hill will travel to West Liberty on Tuesday evening.
