The Seton Hill women's basketball team will enter the school's finals week on a good note following a 69-58 victory over Ohio Valley on Saturday afternoon. Seton Hill jumped out to a 36-23 halftime lead and was able to close out the Fighting Scots in the second half. Seton Hill improves to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in WVIAC play.
The Griffins jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead on the Fighting Scots and never once trailed in the contest.
Paige Alviani scored the first bucket of the game followed by 4 points from
Meghan Mastroianni.
Tiara Stossel closed out the 9-0 run with a three pointer. An Alviani three pointer pushed the Griffin lead to 16-9 at the ten minute mark. SHU extended the lead to 13 points on two free throws from
Mallory Sanner with 5:32 to play in the first half. OVU cut the lead to 8 at 29-21 before the Griffins closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 36-23 lead into halftime.
Ohio Valley cut the lead to 5 points twice in the early part of the second half but the Griffins responded each time pushing the lead back to double digits.
Jharrin Gill scored five straight points to give the Griffins a 55-43 lead with 9:59 to play in the contest. Ohio Valley then went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to trim the lead to two points. Stossel ended the run with another three pointer to get the lead back to five points. After an OVU free throw, Alviani drained another three to give SHU a 61-54 advantage with 6:02 to play. That seemed to take all the air out of the Scots as the Griffins outscored them 8-4 over the final 6 minutes to seal the 69-58 victory.
Paige Alviani led the Griffins with 17 points. She also added 6 assists.
Tiara Stossel chipped in 16 points and 8 rebounds.
Katie Gattuso had another double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Jharrin Gill added 8 points off the bench.
The Griffins will take this week off for finals and return to the court next Saturday when they travel to Alderson Broaddus for a 6 PM tip.
