The Seton Hill women's basketball team opened their 2012 season with a visit to Painesville, OH to battle to Storm of Lake Erie in a non conference matchup. Seton Hill rallied from a 13 point deficit to tie the contest but Lake Erie outscored the Griffins 8-3 over the last 1:30 to earn a 67-61 victory.
Seton Hill jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead just over 5 minutes into the contest.
Katie Gattuso keyed the run by scoring 6 points. The game would remain tight over the next ten minutes.
Paige Alviani then hit a three pointer with 7:31 left in the first half to give the Griffins a 19-16 lead. Lake Erie then went on an 8-0 run to take a 24-19 lead with 3:29 to play. Another Alviani three pointer ended the run and cut the lead back to two. The teams then exchanged baskets for the final three minutes and Lake Erie entered the locker room with a 28-24 lead.
Kelly Brennan drained a three and Gattuso hit a layin to give the Griffins a 29-28 lead just over a minute into the second half. Brennan hit another three to give the Griffins a 32-31 lead. Lake Erie responded with a 14-4 run to take a 45-36 lead with under 13 minutes in the second half forcing a Seton Hill timeout. LEC then went on another 5-2 run to take a 51-38 lead at the under 10 media timeout. Three free throws and an Alviani three pointer cut the lead to 51-44 with just under 8 minutes remaining. Another Alviani three pushed the SHU run to 9-0 and cut the lead to just 4 with 7:30 left.
Tiara Stossel put in a lay in and the Lake Erie lead was cut to two at 51-49. Alviani's short jumper cut the lead to 53-51 at the under five media timeout.
Stossel then tied the score at 53 with just over four minutes to play. Lake Erie then took advantage of a SHU turnover and retook a 55-53 lead with three minutes to play. Another LEC bucket pushed the lead back to four with two minutes left in the contest. Gattuso hit one of two free throws and the lead was cut back to three. After a LEC turnover, Stossel hit a bucket to cut the lead to one with 1:50 left. LEC answered right back and pushed the lead back to three. SHU responded with another bucket from Gattuso and SHU trailed 59-58 with 1:28 to play. LEC hit a baseline jumper and extended their lead to 61-58. The Griffins were called for an offensive foul on their next possession and LEC hit two free throws to give the Storm a 63-58 lead with 44 seconds to play. Lake Erie closed out the contest by hitting its free throws and excaped with a 67-61 victory.
Katie Gattuso posted a double double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Paige Alviani added 16 points.
Kelly Brennan was the third Griffin in double figures with 11.
Seton Hill will battle #16 Gannon on Friday evening in their home opener. Tip is set for 7 PM.
