Griffins Drop Road Contest at West Liberty

Seton Hill traveled to West Liberty for a game that was originally scheduled to be played at home in Greensburg in a non conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

The Griffins led 24-21 but the Hilltoppers scored a late touchdown for a 28-24 victory over the Griffins.  SHU falls to 0-2 on the season.

After stopping the Griffins on a fourth down on their first possession of the contest, West Liberty marched 81 yards in 12 plays to take a 7-0 lead over the Griffins.  The Hilltoppers carried the 7-0 lead into the second quarter of play.

Early in the second quarter, Boden St Marie hit Isaac Ashley with a three yard touchdown pass to tie the score at seven with 13:23 left in the quarter.  Both teams punted on their next possession before the Hilltoppers used a short field to extend their lead to 14-7 with 5:43 left in the half.  The Griffins answered with a 43 yard field goal from Rayyan Bataineh to trim the lead to 14-10 with 1:22 to play.  West Liberty just needed two plays to push their lead to 21-10 at the halftime break.

The game turned around on the first West Liberty drive of the second half.  West Liberty was driving but a scoop and score from De'Mario Manning for 73 yards trimmed the lead to 21-17 with 9:45 left in the third quarter.  The Griffins forced a punt and only needed one play as De'Shaun Williams ran 76 yards on the first play from scrimmage as the Griffins took a 24-21 lead with 6:23 left in the third quarter.

A bad snap on a punt gave the Hilltoppers great field position midway through the fourth quarter.  They took over on the Griffin 39 yard line.  They needed just eight plays to take the 28-24 lead with 3:40 left.  The Griffins could not move the ball on their final two possessions as the Hilltoppers were able to run out the clock on their final possession.

Williams finished with 108 yards rushing and a touchdown.  St Marie threw for 134 yards and a touchdown.  Cody Rubrecht had 3 catches for 55 yards.  Keith Bourque led the Griffins with 11 tackles.

SHU will travel to Lackawanna next weekend.
