Seton Hill played in its first ever PSAC Semifinal as they took on the top seed from the west and host Gannon on Saturday afternoon in Erie.
Seton Hill won three of the four quarters but a 29-12 second quarter proved too costly as a furious comeback came up just short in a 79-73 loss to the Golden Knights. SHU is now 21-8 overall while Gannon improves to 28-3.
SHU got off to a great start offensively in the first quarter.
Hailee Ford scored five and
Hallie Cowan added a three as the Griffins took an early 10-2 lead less than three minutes into the quarter.
Hallie Cowan added another three to put the Griffins in front 15-7 midway through the first. Gannon answered with a 12-0 run as they led 19-15 with 2:41 to play in the quarter.
Hallie Cowan scored the next seven for the Griffins as SHU led 24-23 at the end of the first quarter.
Gannon opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run as they took a 32-24 lead with seven minutes to play before the half.
Shaye Bailey hit a three with 2:20 left in the half that cut the lead to 43-35. Gannon took a 52-36 lead into the halftime break.
The Golden Knights scored the first six in the third quarter before Ford scored five straight to trim the lead to 58-41 with six minutes left in the quarter. Seton Hill scored the final five points of the third quarter as the cut the Gannon lead to 64-50.
Gannon led 70-56 with 6:45 left in the fourth quarter. SHU then scored the next 11 points and trailed 70-67 after a three point play from
Mia Kalich with 2:29 to play. SHU got back to within three at 74-71 with a Bailey free throw with 37 seconds left. Gannon hit five free throws down the stretch to close out a 79-73 win.
Hallie Cowan led SHU with 21 points. Bailey added 19 points. Ford finished with 11. Kalich and
Helene Cowan added 9 points each.
The Griffins will wait to see if they are one of the five at large bids to the NCAA Tourney when the selection show is broadcast on Sunday evening.
