Griffins Rally for Double OT NCAA Tourney Win

Seton Hill returned to NCAA Atlantic Regional action as they took on fifth seed Fayetteville State on Friday evening in the KCAC in Indiana, PA. 

The Griffins rallied from 15 points down in the third quarter to earn an 88-85 double overtime victory over Fayetteville State.  SHU is now 22-8 on the season.  

The Broncos took an early 6-2 lead over the Griffins as both teams showed early game jitters with a few turnovers.  Two threes from Helene Cowan around a Hallie Cowan layup cut the Fayetteville lead to 14-12 at the first quarter media timeout.  The Broncos hit 4 of their last 5 field goals as the Griffins went 1 for their last 10 and trailed 26-17 at the end of the first quarter.  

Emma Fischer hit a three to open the scoring in the second quarter.  A three point play from Mia Kalich trimmed the lead to 34-26 with 5:40 to play.  A layup from Hailee Ford and back to back threes from Hallie Cowan cut the lead to 39-34 with 1:56 left in the second.  The Griffins trailed 41-34 at the halftime break.  

Fayetteville scored the first four points of the third quarter before Shaye Bailey hit a layup to cut the lead to 45-36 with 7:40 left.  The Broncos used a 6-0 run to take a 51-36 lead at the under five minute media in the third quarter.  SHU responded with a 10-2 run as they trimmed the lead to 53-46 with 1:49 to play.  Hallie Cowan had five in the run.  A steal and layin from Fischer cut the lead to 53-50 with just over a minute to play in the quarter.  SHU trailed 58-52 after three quarters of play.  

Abby Mankins hit a three to open the fourth quarter scoring but the Broncos scored the next four to push the lead back to seven.  Back to back layins from Ford cut the lead to 62-61 with 6:29 left forcing a Bronco timeout.  Mankins tied the score at 63 with a bucket with 3:36 left.  Fayetteville answered back with four straight to take a 67-63 lead with 2:40 left.    Hallie Cowan drilled a three to cut the lead to 69-67 with 1:30 left.  Hailee Ford hit a layup with 14 seconds left to tie the score at 69.  

Ford opened the overtime scoring and Hallie Cowan added a three as the Griffins took a 74-69 lead early in the overtime period.  The Broncos hit two threes to take a 75-74 lead with 2:34 left.  Ford completed a three point play to give SHU a 77-75 lead with 1:17 left.  The Broncos hit a pair of free throws to tie the score at 77.  

Kalich opened the second overtime period with a three point play as SHU led 80-77.  Ford hit one of two free throws to give SHU an 83-81 lead with 2:30 left.  Kalich's put back put the Griffins back in front 85-83 with 1:50 to play.  Ford gave SHU an 87-85 lead with 1:15 to play.  Helene Cowan hit one of two free throws to extend the lead to 88-85 with 5.3 seconds to play.  

Hallie Cowan led the Griffins with 23 points.  Ford finished with 21.  Kalich had a double double of 19 points and 22 rebounds with 8 assists and 7 steals.  Helene Cowan tossed in 10.  

Seton Hill will take on top seed and host IUP on Saturday night in the regional semifinal.
