Clarion Defeats Griffins in OT

The Griffins continued PSAC West play on Saturday afternoon as they traveled to Clarion. 

Clarion scored the final nine points in the overtime period as they defeated the Griffins 82-76.  SHU is now 13-9 overall and 7-7 in the PSAC.  

After a Ben Myers three pointer cut the Golden Eagles lead to 7-5, Clarion went on a 10-0 run as they took a 17-5 lead with 13:52 to play in the first half.  Five straight from Dean Simos cut the lead to 17-10 a minute later.  The Griffins responded to an 8-3 Clarion run with a 10-5 Griffins run as they trailed 27-20 with 9:26 left in the half.  The Golden Eagles built their lead to 44-24 with just under five minutes left in the half.  Simos scored six straight and Myers added a three as the Griffins trailed 49-33 at the halftime break.  

Seton Hill scored the first six points of the second half as they cut the Clarion lead back to ten points led than three minutes into the half.  Another 6-0 Griffin run trimmed the Clarion advantage to 52-45 with 15:45 to play.  Clarion used an 8-1 run as they built their lead to 60-46 with 12:26 left.  Back to back layups from Brian Belade and Gabe Gillespie cut the lead to 60-50 at the midpoint of the second half.  SHU went on an 11-2 run over a three minute stretch as they were able to cut the Clarion lead to 66-61 with 5:27 to play.  A layup from Camden Brewer and a three from Williams cut the lead to 68-66 with 2:48 to play.  Brewer put the Griffins in front 71-70 with a three with 1:20 to play.  Simos then made a layin with 34 seconds left to put SHU in front 73-70.  Clarion hit a three to tie the score and send the game to overtime.  

Simos hit a free throw and Brewer made a layup to give SHU a 76-73 lead two minutes into the overtime period.  Clarion then scored the final nine points of the overtime to earn the win.  

Simos led SHU with a double double of 27 points and 10 rebounds.  Williams also added 20 points.  

SHU will host California (PA) on Wednesday evening in another PSAC West contest.
