Helene Cowan's Career High Leads SHU to Win at CalU

Seton Hill began PSAC West play as they made the short trip to California, PA for a conference matchup with the Vulcans.    

The Griffins used a career high from Helene Cowan as the opened PSAC West play with a 90-83 victory on the road at CalU.  The Griffins are now 11-2 overall and 7-0 in PSAC action.  CalU falls to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in PSAC action.  

It was all Helene Cowan in the early going for the Griffins as she scored the first seven points for SHU as they trailed 11-7 at the first media timeout with 3:46 left in the first quarter. Two free throws from Helene and a Hallie Cowan layup tied the score at 11 with 2:31 to play.  A Hallie Cowan three gave SHU a 14-13 lead with 1:28 to play in the quarter.  CalU scored six of the final eight points of the quarter to take a 19-16 lead after one quarter of action.  

California pushed their lead to 30-25 at the second quarter media timeout.  A basket from Helene Cowan and a three point play from Hallie Cowan tied the score at 30 at the four minute mark.  Mia Kalich tied the score at 35 with a layin at the 2:17 mark.  Helene and Hallie each hit two free throws in the final minute as the Griffins cut the Vulcans lead to 43-41 at the halftime break.  

The Vulcans extended their lead to 48-43 in the early portion of the third quarter.  Two free throws from Hailee Ford and a driving layup from Kalich cut the lead back to one, 48-47 at the 7:18 mark.  Back to back threes from Hallie Cowan and Abby Mankins gave SHU a 53-52 lead with 6:17 left.  Cal answered back with an 8-0 run as they took a 60-53 lead with 5:05 to play.  SHU answered back with six straight to trim the lead to 60-59 with 1:48 left in the quarter.  Two free throws from Helene Cowan tied the score at 61 late in the third quarter.  A Helene Cowan layin with 15 seconds left gave SHU a 63-61 lead after three quarters of play.  

The Griffins came out of the gates quickly in the fourth quarter as they scored the first seven points of the quarter to take a 70-61 lead and force a Vulcan timeout at the 8:27 mark.  Back to back layups from Kalich extended the lead to 77-65 with 7:03 to play.  Cal answered back with a 9-1 run as they cut the Griffins lead to 78-74 at the fourth quarter media timeout. After Cal took a 79-78 lead Helene Cowan put the Griffins back in front, 80-79, with a bucket with 3:25 to play.  Helene Cowan hit a pair of free throws and Ford hit one of two as SHU took an 83-79 lead with 2:20 to play.  Hallie Cowan's driving layup extended the Griffin lead to 87-83 with 37.8 seconds to play.  SHU put the game away at the free throw line.  

Helene Cowan scored a career high 34 points to lead the Griffins.  Hallie Cowan finished with 23 points.  Kalich added a double double of 19 points and 15 rebounds.  

The Griffins will host Clarion on Saturday afternoon as they continue PSAC West action.
