Seton Hill hosted tenth ranked Indiana (PA) on Saturday afternoon in the McKenna Center in PSAC West action.
The Crimson Hawks slowly pulled away from the Griffins in the second half in an 86-76 victory. SHU drops to 14-5 overall and 10-3 in the PSAC while IUP improves to 18-1 overall and 11-1 in the PSAC.
IUP built an early three point lead before a three pointer from
Hallie Cowan tied the score at six two minutes into the contest, IUP scored the next five points and never trailed again in the quarter as they took a 19-15 lead after one quarter of play.
The Crimson Hawks opened the second quarter scoring but a three from
Abby Mankins and two
Hallie Cowan free throws trimmed the lead to 21-20 with 8:48 left in the half. IUP scored six straight to extend their lead to seven. Back to back threes from Mankins and
Helene Cowan cut the lead to one with 4:34 left in the half. A three point play from
Mia Kalich put the Griffins in front 31-29 with 3:17 left. The Crimson Hawks closed the half on a 7-3 run as they took a 36-34 halftime lead.
IUP was able to extend their lead to seven points at the midpoint of the third quarter. A three from Mankins and a layup from
Shaye Bailey trimmed the lead back to 47-45 with 3:36 to play. IUP led 56-51 at the end of the third.
The Griffins got back to within three after a
Hallie Cowan steal and Bailey layup that cut the lead to 58-55 with 8:12 to play. IUP answered right back building their lead back up to as many as 11 points. A three from
Hallie Cowan and five straight from
Helene Cowan got the Griffins back to within five at 70-65 with 4:14 to play. That was as close as the Griffins would get down the stretch as IUP hit five of six free throws to close out the win.
Hallie Cowan led the Griffins with 23 points. Mankins and
Helene Cowan each added 15 points. Kalich finished with a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Griffins return to action next Saturday when they travel to Clarion.
