The Griffins continued PSAC West play on Saturday afternoon as they traveled to Edinboro.
Edinboro broke open a tight game over the first ten minutes of the second half as they defeated the Griffins 81-72. SHU drops to 13-6 overall and 7-4 in the PSAC while Edinboro improves to 9-9 overall and 5-6 in the PSAC.
The Griffins got off to a flying start as they opened the game on an 18-5 run over the first 5:29 of the contest. The Griffins hit three threes during the run with
Edir Ortiz leading SHU with five points in the first five minutes of the contest. Six different Griffins scored in the run. Four straight points from
Kedrick Curtis pushed the Griffins lead to 22-10 with 11:48 to play. Edinboro answered with eight straight before baskets from
Dimitrios Sklavenitis and
Gabe Gillespie extended the Griffin lead to 26-18 with 6:56 to play in the half. The Scots tied the score at 26 before baskets from Sklavenitis and Curtis gave SHU a 30-26 lead with 2:05 to play. SHU led 32-30 at the halftime break.
Ortiz hit a three pointer that put the Griffins back in front 41-38 with 16:40 to play in the second half.
Camden Brewer scored four straight for the Griffins as they trailed 47-45 with 12:51 left in the second. The Scots then went on an 18-1 run as they built up a 65-46 lead with 8:06 to play in the half. Three points from
Rashaad Williams and an Ortiz three cut the Scot lead to 65-52 with 6:47 to play. The Scots then answered back with five straight to push their lead to 18 with 5:27 left. Six straight from the Griffins trimmed the lead back to 70-58 at the under four minute timeout. Williams hit a three pointer which cut the lead to 77-66 with 1:22 to play.
Williams led the Griffins with 17 points. Ortiz posted a double double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Sklavenitis also hit double figures with 11.
SHU will travel to Pitt Johnstown on Wednesday evening in another PSAC West contest.
