Softball Splits Doubleheader with UPJ

Seton Hill continued PSAC West action with a doubleheader on the road in Johnstown on Tuesday afternoon as the Griffins traveled to UPJ.  

UPJ scored nine times in their final two at bats as they defeated the Griffins 10-5 in game one of the doubleheader.  SHU scored 12 times in the second inning of game two as they defeated UPJ 17-4 in game two.  SHU is now 27-15 overall and 16-10 in the west.  

SHU took a lead in the second inning of game one.  Anna Kalkowski led off with a single to right.  She moved to second on a ground out and scored on a two out RBI double from Bre Athey as the Griffins took a 1-0 lead.  

The Griffins added a second run in the top of the third inning.  After an out, Kassisy Wittig singled and moved to third on a double from Grace Paredes.  With two outs, Kalkowski fouled out with Wittig scoring on the play to give SHU a 2-0 lead.  

UPJ cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the third inning.  The Mountain Cats added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take 5-2 lead over the Griffins.  The Griffins got two of those runs back in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI ground out from Abby Smearman and a pinch hit RBI single from Lacey Lynn as the Griffins cut the lead to 5-4.  

Pitt Johnstown added five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they took a 10-4 lead over the Griffins.  

Shelby Telegdy added an RBI double in the top of the seventh.  

Athey led the offense with three hits.  Cleland added two hits.  

SHU jumped on UPJ for four runs in the first inning of game two.  Wittig drew a leadoff walk.  She scored on a Telegdy RBI single.  Lynn singled to put two runners on.  Brooklyn Fukushima doubled to score Telegdy and increase the lead to 2-0.  Taylor Schmitt added two more runs with a single as the Griffins took a 4-0 lead.  

The Griffins sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 12 times as they took a 16-0 lead.  Lynn homered twice in the inning, hitting a three run shot then following that with a grand slam.  Fukushima also homered in the inning.  

UPJ scored a pair in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 16-2.  Abby Dejidas added an RBI single in the top of the third inning.  

Lynn was 3-3 at the plate with 2 homers and 7 RBI.  Fukushima added three hits.  Dejidas and Telegdy each had two hits.  Lynn also earned the win in the circle.  She struck out 6.  

The Griffins are scheduled to close out their regular season on Friday afternoon when they host Edinboro.
