Seton Hill began their PSAC West series as they traveled to Washington, PA for the first two games of their four game set with California (PA).
SHU managed just four hits in a 5-0 loss to CalU in game one. The Griffins responded with a 5-1 win in game two to split the doubleheader. SHU is now 24-8 overall and 10-4 in the west. CalU is 23-6 overall and 10-3 in the west.
California took advantage of a pair of hit batters to lead off the bottom of the first and got an important two out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead over the Griffins.
The Vulcans added three more in the fifth, all after two outs. The Vulcans used two singles and a two run homer to score three times. CalU added an unearned run in the sixth for an insurance run and a 5-0 lead.
Jack Whalen tripled and
Brady McGuire doubled in the loss for the Griffins.
SHU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two.
Owen Henne singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. He later scored on a McGuire RBI single.
The Griffins added two more in the third.
Mark Black singled to lead off the inning.
Joe Fiedor and Whalen walked to load the bases. Henne singled to center field to score Black and extend the lead to 2-0.
Owen Mandler then reached on a fielders choice with Fiedor scoring to give SHU a 3-0 lead.
CalU loaded the bases with no one out in the fourth but
Julian Minaya got a foul out and a double play to get out of the inning allowing just one run.
The Griffins got that run and more right back in the top of the fifth inning. Whalen tripled with one out and scored on a Henne double.
Owen Mandler was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Henne scored on a bunt single from McGuire as the Griffins took a 5-1 lead.
Henne led the offense with three hits and two RBIs. McGuire added two hits and two RBIs. Minaya earned the win. He worked four innings, allowing 0 earned runs on three hits while striking out five and walking none.
Zach Herb earned his fifth save with three scoreless innings of relief. He struck out two.
The Griffins will host CalU on Saturday afternoon as they close out their four game set with another doubleheader.
