Griffins Rally for Split With UPJ

Seton Hill continued PSAC West action with a doubleheader against Pitt Johnstown on Tuesday afternoon in Greensburg.  

Pitt Johnstown took game one 7-4 in eight innings.  Seton Hill rallied for a 12-7 victory in game two.  SHU is now 15-11 overall and 4-6 in the PSAC West.  

Pitt Johnstown scored a pair of runs in the third inning and added another run in the fifth inning as the Mountain Cats took a 3-0 lead over the Griffins.  

The Griffins got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Bre Athey and Abby Smearman each singled to lead off the inning.  They moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from Juliette VybiralKassidy Wittig reached on an infield single with Athey scoring.  Wittig then stole second and Smearman scored on an error to cut the lead to 3-2.  

SHU tied the game in the seventh inning.  Vybiral singled with one out.  She scored to tie the game on a two out single from Shelby Telegdy.  

UPJ scored four times on five hits in the eighth inning as they took a 7-3 lead over the Griffins.  

The Griffins got one of those runs back in the eight on a sacrifice fly from Bre Athey.

Wittig and Telegdy each had two hits for SHU in game one.  

Pitt Johnstown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two with a two out solo homer.  The Mountain Cats took a 3-0 lead in the second inning.  

Pitt Johnstown added three more runs in the third inning as they increased their lead to 6-0.  

SHU cut the lead to 6-2 in the third inning.  Wittig who singled scored on an error for the first run and Telegdy added a sacrifice fly to trim the lead to 6-2.  The Mountain Cats added a run in the fifth as they increased their lead to 7-2.  

SHU scored three times in the bottom of the fifth.  Bre Athey doubled to lead off the inning.  Athey moved to third when Grace Paredes reached on an error.  Athey scored on a Brooklyn Fukushima sacrifice fly.  Later in the inning, Kayla Vonstein and Brooke Cleland had back to back doubles with Cleland driving in two runs and cutting the lead to 7-5. 

The Griffins then scored seven times in the sixth.  Paredes and Fukushima had RBI singles as the Griffins tied the game at seven.  Telegdy gave SHU an 8-7 lead with an RBI single.  Olivia Calvetti drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.  Anna Kalkowski added two more runs with a double off the left center fiel wall.  Vybiral closed out the scoring with an RBI double.  

Paredes led the offense with three hits.  Wittig, Athey and Fukushima added two hits.  Briahna McCombs worked four innings and did not allow an earned run.  

The Griffins are scheduled to travel to Gannon for a PSAC West doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.
