Griffins Win as Helene Cowan Goes Over 1,000 Career Points

Seton Hill closed out the home portion of their regular season as they hosted Pitt Johnstown on Senior Day on Wednesday evening.  

The Griffins outscored UPJ in each of the four quarters as they defeated the Mountain Cats 78-61.  SHU is now 22-4 overall and 16-3 in PSAC play.

Junior Helene Cowan went over the 1,000 career point mark with her basket at the 9:31 mark of the first quarter.  

The Griffins took an early lead in the contest on the 1,000th career point from Helene Cowan to open the scoring.  Back to back threes from Hallie Cowan and Hailee Ford gave SHU a 12-6 lead midway through the quarter.  Another Hallie Cowan three and Ford layup pushed the Griffins lead to 21-12 late in the quarter. 

SHU scored the first six points of the second quarter as they led 27-15 with 7:24 left in the half.  Five points from Helene Cowan and a three from Abby Mankins extended the lead to 35-19 with 4:23 left.  The Griffins led 42-32 at the halftime break.  

UPJ cut the lead to seven early in the third quarter, but the Griffins responded with a 13-0 run as they built a 57-37 lead with 5:50 left.  Mia Kalich had seven of the 13 points in the run.  SHU led 61-47 after three quarters of play.  

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Mountain Cats cut the lead to eight, 65-57.  The Griffins then closed the game on a 13-4 run to earn the win.  

Helene Cowan led the Griffins with 17 points.  Ford finished with 14 points.  Kalich added 12 points, eight rebounds and six steals.  Hallie Cowan finished with 11 points.

SHU will close out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Gannon.
