The Griffins closed out the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday evening as they hosted Pitt Johnstown in the McKenna Center.
SHU outscored UPJ 42-23 in the second half and 27-6 over the final 13:30 of regulation as they defeated UPJ 77-62. SHU is now 15-12 overall and 8-11 in the PSAC.
With the victory, the Griffins clinch one of the six spots from the West in the PSAC Tournament. Â
There were five ties in the first six minutes of the contest as both teams got off to slow starts with the score being tied at 11 with 14 minutes to play in the first half. UPJ answered with a 9-3 run to take a 20-14 lead midway through the first half.Â
Over the final ten minutes of the first half, the Griffins never trailed by more than six points. SHU was able to cut the lead to 31-30 on a
Kedrick Curtis bucket with 3:27 left in the half. SHU trailed 39-35 at the halftime break. Â
UPJ pushed their lead to as many as eight early in the second half and led 45-39 two minutes into the half. A three from Canden Brewer and a basket from
Kedrick Curtis trimmed the lead to 45-44 with 16:44 left. The Mountain Cats led by six before a four point play from
Ryan Meis cut the lead to 52-50 with 14 minutes left. UPJ pushed their lead back to six before an 8-0 Griffin run gave SHU a 58-56 lead midway through the second half. Â
A Brewer bucket and another Meis three gave SHU a 65-59 lead with 5:30 left. SHU then put the game away with an 8-0 run that extended their lead to 73-61 with 1:57 left. Â
Meis led the Griffins with a game high 22 points.Â
Gabe Gillespie added a double double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Curtis finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. Â
SHU will close out the regular season on Saturday at Gannon. Â
