Seton Hill and #16 Wingate met at Schoenbaum Stadium in Charleston, WV in the season opener for the Griffins on Sunday afternoon.
The Griffins were consistent, scoring three goals in each of the four quarters, as they defeated Wingate 12-9. SHU improves to 1-0 on the season while Wingate falls to 3-1.
The first quarter was the difference in the game as they outscored the Bulldogs by a 3-0 margin. A little over three minutes into the contest,
Grace Agnello opened the scoring for the Griffins. Midway through the quarter, the Griffins took a 2-0 lead on a free position shot from
Skylar Orlowski. With 2:34 to play in the quarter,
Brooklyn Miller scored to give SHU a 3-0 lead.
A little over a minute into the second,
Carleigh Sutfin scored on a free position shot to increase the lead to 4-0. Agnello answered a Wingate goal and gave SHU a 5-1 lead with 8:31 to play in the half.
Carley O'Mara scored with 2:55 left as SHU led 6-3 at the halftime break.
The Bulldogs scored the opening goal of the third quarter to cut the SHU lead to 6-4 but the Griffins scored twice in just over a minute to push the lead back to 8-4. Orlowski and Agnello scored the two Griffin goals. Wingate scored the next two goals to trim the lead back to two but Sutfin scored with 2:31 to play in the third to give SHU a 9-6 lead.
Wingate scored twice in 31 seconds early in the fourth quarter to cut the Griffins lead to 9-8 with 8:31 left. SHU responded with a pair of free position shot goals from
Sydney Marusko and
Ella Wroblewski to push the lead back to 11-8 with 6:56 to play. The Bulldogs scored with 4:47 to play to cut the lead to 11-9 but Sutfin scored with 2:53 left to put the game away.
Sutfin and Agnello each scored three times. Orlowski added two goals and two assists.
Mila Udovicic added three assists.
Allison Hathaway made five saves in the first half.
SHU will travel to Pace next weekend for another non conference matchup.
