Women's Basketball Earns Key PSAC West Win in OT

The Griffin women's basketball team returned to the court after a week and a half off with an important PSAC West and Atlantic Regional contest against Indiana (PA) on Wednesday evening.

SHU used a three pointer from Hallie Cowan to tie the game at 69 and send the game to overtime and then never trailed in the OT period as they defeated the Crimson Hawks 86-82.  SHU is now 21-3 overall and 15-2 in the PSAC while IUP falls to 18-5 overall and 13-4 in the PSAC.

Seton Hill got off to a slow start as IUP opened the game with the first eight points.  SHU responded with six points from Hailee Ford and five from Mia Kalich as they took an 11-10 lead with 3:43 left in the first quarter.  IUP led 22-16 at the end of the first quarter.  

The second quarter was a low scoring quarter as the Griffins outscored IUP 13-11 in the quarter.  Late in the quarter, the Griffins cut the lead to two on a Ford basket but IUP beat the buzzer as they took a 33-29 lead at the halftime break.  

IUP led 44-36 with 6:24 to play in the third quarter.  Back to back baskets from Hallie Cowan and Ford cut the lead to 44-40 with 5:25 left in the third.  Back to back three pointers from Hallie Cowan and Emma Fischer tied the game at 48 with 49 seconds to play in the third.  The teams exchanged a pair of free throws and the game moved to the fourth quarter tied at 50.  

IUP led 58-54 with 6:25 left in regulation.  Four straight from Hallie Cowan tied the score at 58 with 4:51 left.  Hallie then tied the game at 63 with a three pointer with 3:50 left.  A three point play from Ford gave SHU a 66-64 lead with 1:50 left.  IUP used a layup with six seconds to play to take a 69-66 lead which set up the game tying three point buzzer beater from Hallie Cowan that sent the game to overtime tied at 69.  

The teams exchanged baskets to open the OT period before Fischer hit a three with four minutes to play which gave SHU a 74-71 lead, a lead they would not give up the rest of the overtime period.  Hallie Cowan's three pushed the SHU lead to 77-72 with 2:18 left.  A three point play from IUP cut the lead to two but Shaye Bailey made a fastbreak layup to push the lead to 79-75 with 1:22 to play.  Kalich answered an IUP basket with a three point play of her own to give SHU an 82-77 lead with 36 seconds left.  Sakeria Haralson then hit one of two free throws to push the lead to six with 29 seconds to play.  Hallie Cowan put the game away, hitting two free throws with four seconds left that put SHU in front 86-82.  

Hallie Cowan led the Griffins with 27 points.  Mia Kalich posted another double double of 22 points and 12 rebounds.  She also added seven steals.  Ford finished with 19 points.

SHU will travel to Edinboro on Saturday for another important PSAC West contest.
