Griffins Win Five Set Battle with UPJ

Seton Hill hosted Pitt Johnstown on Friday evening in a PSAC West contest on Senior Night on the Hill.

The Griffins won the fifth set to take the match 3-2 over the Mountain Cats.  The Griffins are now 15-10 overall and 7-6 in the west while UPJ falls to 15-10 overall and 6-7 in the PSAC West.  

Prior to the match, the Griffins honored seven members of their program for Senior Night.  

SHU jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first set behind three kills from Payton Rodberg.  UPJ battled back to tie the set at nine but the Griffins used a pair of 3-0 runs to take a 16-11 lead.  Kills from Rodberg and Catie Flohr gave SHU a 1-0 lead with a 25-23 first set win.  

UPJ took the second set by a 25-19 score to even the match at one.  The Griffins took a quick 4-0 lead to start the third set.  SHU then used a 7-1 run to take an 11-4 lead.  UPJ tied the set at 12 before kills from Kaylee Mattera and Mallory Meinen put SHU in front 14-12.  A Rodberg ace and a block from Flohr and Ella Deeter gave SHU a 21-18 lead.  Emma Meurer gave SHU a 2-1 lead with a 25-23 lead.  

The Mountain Cats tied the match at two with a 25-20 fourth set win.  The Griffins came out of the gates firing behind the serve of Kendyl Wagner in the fifth set as they took a 5-0 lead behind four Wagner aces.  Two kills from Flohr and one from Maddie Stout gave the Griffins a 9-2 lead in the set.  Rodberg and Flohr got kills to end the match with SHU taking a 15-10 fifth set win.  

Flohr led SHU with 16 kills.  Rodberg and Meurer each had 11 kills.  Meinen led the offense with 37 assists.  Wagner had six total aces and a match high 23 digs.  

SHU will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they host IUP.
