Rock Runs to Victory Over Griffins

The Griffins hosted #24 Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon at Offutt Field in a PSAC Western Division Matchup in Greensburg,

Slippery Rock jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and defeated the Griffins 49-7.  SHU is now 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the west while the Rock improves to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the west.

The Rock used a pair of rushing touchdowns from their quarterback to take a 14-0 lead over the Griffins in the first quarter of action.  Two more Rock touchdowns in the second quarter, one thru the air and another on the ground pushed the Rock's lead to 28-0 at the halftime break.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Griffins forced a three and out from the Rock and took over on their own 37 yard line after the punt.  SHU needed just seven plays to move the 63 yards for the score.  The big play on the drive was a 43 yard run from Ky'Ron Craggette that moved the ball to the Rock 11.  Three plays later, Darrian Carter scored from five yards out to cut the lead to 28-7 with 9:41 left in the third.  The Griffins forced another three and out on the next Rock possession but a holding penalty on the first play of the SHU drive negated a 12 yard run and the Griffins could not capitalize on the good field position.  After a punt, the Rock went 89 yards in five plays to extend their lead to 35-7.

The Rock added two more scores in the fourth quarter for the 49-7 win.

Slippery Rock finished the contest with 26 first downs and 410 yards rushing.

Craggette rushed for 112 yards in the contest.  Ben Zavatchan had nine punts for an average 44.2 yards with four inside the 20 yard line.  Ritchie McCormack led the Griffins with 10 tackles.

SHU will host Gannon next Saturday afternoon at 2 PM for Homecoming.
