Middle Quarters Carry Griffins to Win Over CalU

The Griffin women's basketball team concluded a two game homestand with a PSAC West matchup with CalU on Saturday afternoon in the McKenna Center.

Seton Hill outscored CalU 54-28 in the middle two quarters as they rolled to a 93-74 victory over the Vulcans.  SHU is now 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the PSAC while CalU falls to 7-8 overall and 4-5 in the PSAC.

The first quarter was tightly played throughout.  There were three ties over the first two and a half minutes.  Back to back three pointers from Christiane Frye and Shaye Bailey gave SHU a 19-17 lead with 3:45 to play in the quarter.  Bailey hit a pair of free throws but the Vulcans scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 22-21 lead over the Griffins.

Frye opened the second quarter with three straight layups as SHU took a 27-22 lead less than two minutes into the quarter.  Bailey gave SHU a 34-29 lead at the midway point of the quarter.  CalU cut the lead to 36-34 before the Griffins closed out the half with six straight points as they led 42-34 at the halftime break.

The third quarter belonged to the Griffins as they outscored CalU 33-16.  The Vulcans cut the lead to eight early in the quarter but the Griffins answered with a 9-0 run.  Helene Cowan hit a three in the run and Mia Kalich capped off the run with a basket as SHU led 55-38 with 6:28 to play.  A late 6-0 run on four points from Frye extended the Griffins lead to 75-49.  The Griffins were 13-14 from the floor in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Vulcans would get no closer than 17 points as the Griffins were able to close out the victory.

Frye led the Griffins with a game high 26 points.  Kalich posted another double double, this one with 20 points and 18 rebounds.  Helene Cowan and Bailey each finished with 14 points.
